Help Problem with USB Connection point in HTC Desire

I am currently on my fourth spare HTC desire charger, as each one successively breaks down, and no longer 'fits' the mini usb charger connection on the handset.

Surely this can't be down to each and every charger I have bought being faulty? OK, there are some cheap and nasty ones out there, but even my 'in the box' original charger has bust, and now an official replacement one has gone the same way.

They all start out OK, but with a few weeks, or less, the connection between the cable and the phone becomes very loose, now to the point where the damn lead falls out if you so much as look at it.

Has anyone else had such trouble, and does it actually sound like the phone itself and not the leads that is the problem?

The phone is only 9 months old, and I'm fed up with this

thanks for any help

I'd say its the leads. Are they cheap chargers and leads?

I've been using the cable that came with my HTC charger daily for the best part of a year now and while its a little looser than the Belkin cable I connect to the laptop with it still hangs on in there fine.

The micro usb connector relies on two little springy hooks on the underside to clip into the socket. If you're buying cheap chargers maybe these clips aren't so well made, get stuck in or lose their shape.

Have you tried a quality cable? Belkin or HTC original?

I've actually used a range of chargers, cheap and nasty and also HTC branded ones (my latest was branded and broke within 3 weeks!). Having looked at the mini usb connection on the phone, I'm pretty sure something doesnt look right with it.

Almost as though it's bent out of shape or there's a split in the metal.....?

I can leave it back to the shop (o2) for repair, but it's a right pain in the arse when you end up using your mobile for all internet use:mad:

I have used two original HTC desire HD charters that came with phone, both faulty after a short time....I just happened to try my Motorolla charger, and works perfectly, and doesn't break down.....give it a try:)
( from a Motorolla V phone)

I have exactly the same problem with my HTC Desire HD, 11 months old. Its eaten through 4 chargers, 2 of which were HTC and 2 of which were Blackberry (And blackberry actually make phone accessories normally with half decent durability)

Its driving me crazy buy often find someway of charging it upside down with the cable kind of trapped behind it can help.

Shame as the phone runs fast and is decent, just build quality of connections is awful.

Any solutions please let me know.

I have this same issue, on my second one. It's a belkin USB cable, and I've had it only a month or so, and yet last night I noticed its become very, very loose already - as in, it simply sits in the port rather than being "locked"

So if I pick up the phone, it simply drops out

Must be a problem with the phone
Extremely annoying

Hi,

I've got the same problem here. The original HTC cable that came with my desire HD, works perfect. But when I use another cable, the connection is simply extremely loose. Even when I use the cable from my older HD2, it drops out of my Desire HD. Using my other cables on my HD2 works perfectly too. It's only on the Desire HD that the connectors are loose. It's very very annoying. Comparing the connectors shows, that the hole of the original cable is bigger than on any other usb connector...

HTC is really losing points from my point of view... always loved their devices, but this is really something that can't be forgiven. USB is a STANDARD!!!

I have problems with this and I put it down to the phone / socket itself. The problem occurs with all leads, including HTC accessories. The bottom line is the mini usb port is shit.

What has helped is having a charger docking station thingie, basically because the phone sits upright in it and you have gravity working with you, keeping the damn thing connected. I use one all the time now and it is not a problem. As soon as I try to plug it in in the car or anywhere else using the standard lead, trouble is never far behind.

I have found a fix that works for me (without taking your phone apart) for the symptom of "micro USB charger cord falling out of phone".

I want to take this opportunity to state that IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE IN DOING THIS PROCEEDURE,,,,,DON'T! TAKE IT TO A REPAIR PERSON WHO HAS STEADY HANDS AND GOOD VISION AND KNOWLEDGE!
I will not be responsible for any damage whatsoever that happens to your phone if you follow my suggestions in the following paragraphs including the attached illustrated image.

Now,,,here we go!

(This is worth the read) please see the attached image!

I purchased my HTC Desire HD 4G late this past summer (2011), and shortly after, my charging cable started falling out from my phone. I purchased 3 micro USB adaptors and cords since, and have always had the same issue.

I have read that many other users have had the same/similar issues with their micro USB chargers in their phones too. A LOT of people at that!

So, I was thinking.... I know this phone spends all day in my pocket. What if there was compacted “fuzz” in the socket of the phone, where the charge cord plugs in, blocking the charge cord from going in all the way? Well... I grabbed a needle, and a flashlight, (removed my phone battery to be safe) and wouldn't you know it, I pulled out literally a "carpet" from the charge port. Ok, I thought. This should make a difference. It did a bit, but the cords were still falling out of the phone.

The way the micro USB socket in the phone is configured, there is a larger open area which is easily accessible with a needle, but, there is this connector-pin "row", for a lack of a better term that is positioned off to the bottom of the micro USB "hole". I was unable to clean behind that "row". I didn't even know if there was anything behind it that could be causing a problem. I could barely see if there was.

Well...there WAS!

The only way I could get behind that row (without using some kind of microscopic tools), was to take my needle and "flatten/file" it with a file from above, and below 180 degrees apart, while holding it SECURELY in a pair of pliers (see attached picture). I was careful to file up the top, and the bottom 1/4 of an inch, (almost 3/4 cm) until the needle was as "flat as possible"! If the needle is too thick, and it is forced between the “pin-row” and the inner wall of the micro USB socket, irreparable damage could occur!

Again, I took the battery out of my phone (AS YOU SHOULD TOO), and very gently/carefully with that needle swiped behind that row, and, out came even more fuzz. Lots of fuzz!

I quickly blew out the rest, and grabbed my USB charge cord, and slipped that sucker all the way in. The charge cord locked in, just like the day I received my phone! I tried a couple other cords, and they were all able to lock in as well.

This just amazed me. It just needed a simple cleaning! That’s all it took.
And all this time I thought things were worn out.

Well, for my phone, this was the perfect fix. It may be for you too!
I have attached an image with everything you need to understand what I have just told you about this “cleaning method”.

Hopefully others will have success too.

(Be VERY careful as you will be doing this at your own risk!!!)

Thankyou very much, My boyfriends phone was just the same, and now ive done this it works perfect again!!! thankyou very much :).

I just gave my HTC connector a good old "scrape" with a needle, for want of a better term, as I've been absolutely tearing my hair out...the connection has been getting worse and worse over months, to the point where the battery was depleting and I couldn't do anything about it! :( Before that I had my phone at all sorts of funny angles trying to get the blasted thing to charge up!

Bought myself a Motorola charger from ebay that I probably don't need now, but always handy to have a spare. Interesting that the connection "loosens" for some, on AC adapters/USB leads, as my niece's Blackberry chargers/BB phone connector always goes the same way and she even had the cheek to blame me for the charger going loose in her phone (I hardly ever use her charger!!). I'll recommend she tries a Motorola AC Adapter.

I bought "official Blackberry" MicroUSB leads from Amazon ages ago, and I must admit, they haven't grown loose at all. The crappy third party USB leads, they go useless within a month...avoid them!

PS: Bah, spoke too soon....it stopped charging (red light went off). Might be onto something though, could try taking it to a repair shop to see if they can give the connector a good clean.

@northcaledon

I am dumbfounded. That worked an absolute treat. Who knew so much fluff could accumulate in such a small hole! That is brilliant, thanks a lot.

It is easy to take for granted the joys of using your phone while it is charging. Actually hold it, risk moving it, when you had managed to get that little orange light to stay on. My phone had taken that joy away from me. But now I have taken it back. I lie here now, typing on my phone that is also charging, about to go to sleep. Tomorrow when I awaken, it will be charged. It is a good feeling, knowing that.

Same problem, even a new htc cable didn't work........ Have you got a kindle or kobo? That cable works perfectly for some reason.....

I have the same problem with HTC Desire-S .It has eaten three chargers though the chargers dont fall off they dont charge nor is it recognised by HTC-Sync.And when I gave it HTC for service , They say that the Motherboard has to be replaced and that it'll cost Rs10,500($190).Its ridiculous.
