Root Problems accesing phone with OSX

heroooo

Newbie
I'm having trouble accessing my phone through my Mac. I've downloaded the sdk and when I open the terminal and type in commands, it does nothing? It just moves down to the next line. I know I'm doing (or not doing) something stupid.

Sorry for the n00b question, but I'm trying to get a different splashscreen and this is the only way to do it.

I guess I should follow that up by asking if I can do this through the terminal emulator on my phone? When I open the terminal I'm still getting the $ sign even though I'm rooted with unrevoked 3.32?

1) What are you trying to do? Adb? Did you set it up right or follow instructions from somewhere?
2) This is for a splash screen? I assume if you're trying from a computer, you're attempting the fastboot mode, is that correct? If so, you need the eng bootloader, fyi.
3) Yes, you need to type su in the terminal before you can do anything as root. What do you mean only in the terminal, though?
4) There are much simpler ways of installing a splashscreen. If you've got an img, there are a couple ways. You have a link to what you want?

Yes, I was trying to access abd, I tried to follow the instructions from the website, but they were geared towards PC users.

Yes it is for a splashscreen. I didnt really get to the fastboot mode yet, I'm still trying to use the abd. I havent heard of an eng bootloader?

I guess I was just thinking out loud there, it was a few different questions/thoughts. I meant that I still couldnt access my phone through my computer.

Yes, here is a link http://worldofbbthemes.com/macodesigns/SSScreens/splash1metaldroid.bmp

Oh, I have the zip file for it. I thought you just wanted am image haha sorry. I dont have access to a windows machine regularly. If it's that much easier to do it on a PC I can use my brothers, but i dont mind doing a little extra work to be able to do it on my mac. I've heard something about boot camp? Would that, or a program like that let me do this on my mac? Thanks for your help

If you get boot camp rolling you can do anything windows on your mac.
I dont want windows anywhere near my macs, so i havent dont it :/
Ill just use everyone elses splash screens and stuff, instead of making my own, until i find a way to go through everything, probably on terminal, via the mac. If i find a good tutorial, im comfortable with terminal. Ill let you know if anything ever comes up.

Yeah, I would rather just keep it one or the other, mac or pc. This splashscreen was made by someone else, I'm just trying to put it on my phone. I'll do some more research and see if I can find some more information. thanks

Oh, you have the zip? What format is it? Is it a PC36IMG? Because those can be flashed from hboot. If you just have the .img file, I can show you how to make a PC36IMG and flash it. It's easy enough. Let me know.

Making the pc36img isnt too hard. But we are on macs, and i havent found a way to do it on mac, unless you know a way.
(I havent tackled adb yet, so thats out of the question lol)

If you have a splash screen in the .img format (most are), all you have to do is insert it into a PC36IMG.zip already made for flashing a spash screen. Download this:

http://downloads.unrevoked.com/forever/splash/PC36IMG.zip

That's the custom unrevoked splash screen. Take whatever splash screen you want (in .img format), and rename it to splash1.img. Replace the splash1.img already in that PC36IMG with the one you have. Copy the PC36IMG to the root of your sdcard, and flash it from recovery. You should be able to do that on a mac.

Hmm... i have never seen that before, and ive spent some decent time looking for a way to make my own splash screens.
Thanks

Edit: ok, now i need to get them in img format though. Like from bmp to img.

No problem. I talked it through with some other people in another thread, and it worked for everyone. Personally, I have no desire to change the splash screen, so I haven't changed it, but I'm sure this works if you do it right.

I changed to the carbon fiber one in maco's splash screen thread, it looks so much better IMHO. I do a lot of my playing around on the phone about this time of night and its dark in my office, so when im constantly rebooting, that bright white screen got on my nerves.
The carbon fiber one looks really smooth though.
Do it...you know you want it ;)

Haha, ok, well you have a point, there. I might just have to try it out, then. I'm trying to track down an issue I've been having with something totally unrelated. When I'm done with that, I'll play around with this some more.

Well I'm feeling a little foolish for making such a big deal out of this. It's starting to seem that I can do just about everything I want, or probably should do with root explorer/astro/mount sd to computer.

I read through the entire process and it seems like they were just using abd to move the files. I have heard that some things wont work as well if you copy and paste with these programs, but this worked great. I just put the zip file at the root of sd card from the computer, rebooted holding down volume, it asked me if I wanted to update splash1, I said yes and now no more sprint 4g garbage. It's my official mission to get rid of everything that says sprint on my phone just out of principal.

Thats some great info akazabam! I'll definitely be trying this soon!

I think that we might have the same splash surfologist87, those macos screens are awesome! I have the one that has the metal bar in the middle with the andriod robot. I cant wait to start flashing new roms, this customization is incredible.

Ah, yeah, adb is a great solution...when it's already set up. Unless you plan to use it for other things, the other solutions always work fine.
