Root Problems flashing any ROM

Hi,

I rooted using Unrevoked3 and since then tried, with no success, to flash various different ROMs.

The problem I'm having is that right after first loading the ROM, an unending barrage of force close messages flood me (the process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again), and there's no signal. By struggling my way through all of these FC's, I manage to get to the wireless and network settings and I notice that the Airplane mode switch is being turned on and off repeatedly. The bottom option for the network settings also appears to be going in and out of "greyed out" mode. The only way to stop the FC's is by somehow managing to press the Airplane mode button at just the right time so that it stays on. Once Airplane mode is on, there are no FC's but, also, still there's no signal since it's airplane mode. I can, however, turn on my wifi and internet works perfectly.
So obviously the phones inability to connect to my network is what causes all of these FC's. The question is why?

I have tried several different ROM's, among them a few versions of Cyanogen including the latest one and the latest CM6, Oxygen, DevNull... All had the same issue.
I am wiping my Data, cache and Dalvik Cache before every flash. I tried running Fix Permissions from ROM Manager. I even tried flashing several different Radios. Nothing works!

After restoring my official rooted Sense ROM, everything works perfectly. What the hell is in (or missing from) these custom ROM's that prevents the phone from connecting to my network??

Please, Please help! It's driving me crazy...

GET RID OF ROM MANAGER (WRONG MANAGER/MONG MANAGER)
its bad for desire and you have no reason to be using at as your device has a hard coded recovery since using unrevoked

what have you done with rom manager other than flash? have you partitioned SD card for a2sd rom or just flashed other standard roms?
did you wipe before flashing other roms?

Yes, yes. I know that ROM Manager is bad. I never used it for anything other then what I wrote. Which was the fix permissions option. I did that only once.

I never partitioned the SD since I only used standard ROMs. I'm using the recovery menu to manually flash the roms right after I wipe the cache, data and dalvik. I also tried to format the system partition once, but that also didn't work.

thats interesting
Can you tell me what PVT version you are using (boot to bootloader) and recovery version please

Can you give me all the specific information in your hboot please? Also can you give me all the information in settings > about phone.

What network are you on? What country?

Recovery version: Clockwork 2.5.0.7

hboot information:

BRAVO PVT1 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-0.93.0001
MICROP-031d
TOUCH PANEL-SYNT0101
RADIO-5.17.05.23

Phone info (I'm picking the stuff I think relevant):

Mobile network type: HSDPA
Model number: HTC Desire A8181
Baseband version: 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.23
Kernel version: 2.6.32.15-gf5a401c htc-kernel@and18-2 #1
Build number: 2.29.405.5 CL293415
Software number: 2.29.405.5

Network's name is Cellcom and I'm from Israel.

Please tell me if I missed anything.

there should be no reason you are getting these errors
make sure when you are in recovery you are picking the option for wipe data factory reset before flashing a rom

This is very strange. Just to be sure, you could delete anything called update.zip from the root of your sd card and from the clockworkmod directory and any subdirectory of that. This is just to ensure there isn't a "fake flash" copy of CWM from ROM Manager anywhere on the system.

But I am puzzled by this. If it was 1 ROM I might think a bad download, otherwise some incompatible data or add-on. But if you are wiping as described, and not flashing anything else, I can't see how that can be the case.

Finally got it sorted. The solution seems a bit weird.

It seems that that the cause of the problem was the USIM card that the network provided me when I signed up. It worked perfectly fine with the stock Sense ROM, but once I tried any other ROM, the phone just couldn't connect to the network. After replacing the card with an older version, it suddenly works fine with Cyanogen. It doesn't seem like my card was defective because the same thing happened to a lot of other people with that same USIM model.

Any idea on how is it that a certain SIM card just wouldn't work on custom ROM's, but would only work on the stock one?

With custom ROM's? Well it didn't work with my brother's phone, but he has a Desire also. His SIM card, which was the same as mine, produced the same issue. After replacing the SIM like I did, he got it to work okay.

Doesn't seem like a coincidence. Especially after reading on other forums posts of people with the same SIM version, having the exact same problem with different phone models.
