Root problems in the installing ROM process

Right... Well I think that's because you're not rooted.

Have you tried instantroot.apk already? I don't expect it to work, since firmware that doesn't work with flashrec (like yours) also doesn't like instantroot.apk.

There is another way to root via adb that I've found. It might work, it might not - I've never tried it.

It's a pretty out of date guide, so I'll write it out again:

-Put the amon ra recovery.img in your C:\android\tools
-Extract the SU app and put it in C:\android\tools
-Download the windows fastboot tool from a quarter of the way down this page and put it in C:\android\tools
-Turn off the phone and boot by holding back + power.
-Plug in the phone via USB - The phone should say FASTBOOT USB not just FASTBOOT
-The PC might be installing some drivers, so let that finish.
-Go to command prompt and enter (one at a time again):
- cd C:\android\tools
- fastboot devices

Then tell me what it comes back as saying :)

So it wouldn't accept 'fastboot boot recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img'?

Don't know if the method I posted will work either then :(

i'll try . the su 34 kb or the superuser apk 17kb to tools?

or both

there is already a fastboot in tools

ok i put all in tools went cmd entered android tools then then fastboot devices and it came up with my s/n ************ fastboot

phone is now on fastboot menu says fastboot usb

with all the hero cvt ship s-on stuff above it

and below vol down hboot mode
menu reste device

Ok, so everything is working so far then.

Now enter: fastboot boot nameoffile.img

Just replace nameoffile with the name of the recovery.img you placed in C:\android\tools.

*Holds breath*

EDIT: I'd try with the fastboot.exe thats there to start with first. If that doesn't work, move it out of the way and try the one I linked to.

ok so fastboot boot recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img

is that right if so does it matter about caps on RA part

downloading boot image failed (remote :not allow)
finished 0.002 secs

this is gonna be the longest topic on record lol call guiness book of records we shold get some recognition for our effort

Right... so that didn't work. Ok well, then this is where we're up to so far:

- You can't root the phone or get a custom recovery on there without downgrading. We've tried pretty much everything, and it's unavoidable that you'll have to downgrade.

- So your options for downgrading are either installing via RUU.exe (which, for some unexplained reason won't work) or using flashboot (which gave you a cid error). Flashboot still seems the way to go to me though.

- So, as I understand it the cid error means your goldcard hasn't worked. Usually in that situation we recommend people try different SD cards out and re-make the goldcard until it works. (Since presumably people make mistakes when making the goldcard). Sometimes people have luck when trying other RUU.exes too, which in your case would mean extracting the ron.zip from more RUUs. I would recommend you make a goldcard the long way round, rather than that tool, since we've more experience with those.

So it's up to you whether you want to keep at it or not. I, for one, need some sleep :) Cya

yeah i made the long route gold card last nite and tried again

so my card is on the mission goldcard making method which took about an hour as i went through it slowly

also i installed androot and it said i had been rooted but when i ran rom manager and clicked the 1st option i think it was something like clockmod recovery flasher? it said i dont have command priveleges

also i tried again that 1.76 wwe RUU AND I DOWloaded another something like 405.5 which was on unlockr that is another one to downgrade to but again when the update tool runs it gets to wait for bootloader then stops usb error 170 or 171

i just noticed something else the htc sync which i downloaded from htc site and choose hero as my phone , been looking at my files and it say htc legend htc sync ... should it not be htc hero htc sync if i downloaded it from hero page

i just powered off n held power n back and it didnt give me a cid error this time... this time it went through sd check then said checking heroimg.zip then main version is older update fail ... nothing about cid this time

evening xryo and slug .. please tell me while i was not here yesterday that you have come up with the wonder solution lol

how ya both doing anyway

i have tried everything on this site and about 100 other sites lol

i think my phone does not want a new ROM

back again . i aint giving up .

ok so iunstead of it saying cid failed it now says main version is older ,

and after search google with this ....'' htc hero hboot error main version is older ''

someone seems to have fixed it with a sappimg ... whatever that is can you guys shed some light on that for me please

I'm trying to root my phone and from what I have read it is necessary to create a "goldcard" in order to flash the sappimg.nbh file. I followed the steps (theunlockr) and was successful according to their test of a computer being able to read the SD card after the process of copying the goldcard image to the micro SD. I've made four separate goldcard's using Kingston 2GB cards, each time I believe successfully.

When moving onto the process of flashing sappimg.nbh through HBOOT I continually received the same error message "Update Fail, Main Version Older." This error message appears as the update is finalizing the checksum process. Does anyone have an idea of what my next step should be? Is there a more recent sappimg.nbh file that I should use? Thanks for your help!

Problem solved! It turns out that I required a later version of the sappimg file. I used 2.53.707.2 sappimg (Google searchable). The only issue is that when the phone booted with that image it did not have Andriod market installed, which is needed for downloading Linda file manager for a subsequent step. After a short freak out, I then loaded the original sappimg that I downloaded from theunlockr redirect. Tada...was able to move forward with the root process and am now running Froyo!!! I hope this helps others.

thats what it says

Never heard of a sappimg file before.

Could you post the link of that website you quoted?

EDIT: Nevermind, found it.

That's ok, already found it.

I'm not sure what this magical sappimg file is, but it sounds like a component of a ROM or something to me. It's something HTC release.

EDIT: Ok, it seems the sappimg file is something people replace on their phones in order to make them rootable. I'm not sure this is applicable to the hero.

But the reason they're showing up in your search is because you need to have a goldcard to flash a sappimg.

It's just that this sappimg isn't a fix for your problem, it's something else people are trying to flash and it gives them the same error.

They all get the same answer too, that a goldcard will fix their problem. I'm still not convinced your goldcard worked.

But I heard (from Slug) that there's an app that can root 2.1 now. So maybe once you get the 2 OTA update you can root that and flash whatever you want :)

i'll wait and try when its out ..

i did install androot and it said my device had been rooted but couldnt do anything with it

Yeah, I think thats because you had one of the firmwares patched against rooting (and flashrec). But it seems they've found a new exploit in 2.1 :)

ok thanks anyway for all ya help .. and you slug for when ya read this

and i'll see ya all at xmas when 2.1 is released on 3 lol
