Root problems rooting rezound

jlb0305

Android Enthusiast
I've tried rooting my rezound with stock ROM as I want to use Titanium Backup to save off data before doing anything, but I keep getting stuck.

I've tried ZergRush, but it keeps going through and saying it couldn't copy superuser.apk to system

SuperOneClick gets stuck at step 7.

PDAnet is not running and I stopped and killed HTCsync. USB debugging is enabled and i have tried connecting in Charge only, USB drive, and HTC sync modes. Also tried rebooting phone.

None of the temp root or one clicks are going to work. Our only option at this time is to unlock using htcdev tools. Be aware that This does void "all or parts of your warranty"

There a guide stickied at the top of the page if you wish to go this route :)

but doesn't doing the HTCdev wipe your data. That was kind of why I wanted some sort of temp root, to back everything up. Not worried about warranty because I have the assurion full coverage.

Does anyone know if anyone is working on a possible temp root/ one click root for the phone?

That's correct, unlocking your bootloader will wipe everything.

yup. unfortunately there is no way around this at this time. the update to 2.01.605.11 broke temp root for those that were using it. :(

for what its worth, htcdev will wipe your data the when you unlock, but if you do NOT install the recovery permanently, you will be able to recieve OTAs and always be able to reroot after.

plus you will have the ability to use titanium backup, and make nandroid backups in your custom recovery(youll just need to launch it into phone memory whenever you want touse it)

in other words, this will be the last and only time that youll have to wipe and start completely over :)

pardon my noob-ness but how would i root it then without permanent recovery? Isn't stuff like AmonRa permanent and required for root now?

by following the guide to unlock and temporarily launch recovery, and then flash root files.

no,amon recovery is not neccessarily permanent. you can boot it temporarily into the phones memory and use it to flash the superuser file, make a backup, restore a backup, even flash a rom,all without permanetly overwriting the phones stock recovery.

permanently installing amon ra(or any custom recovery) is an option, but i dont recomend the folks that want to stay mostly stock to do that. it saves you many headaches to keep the stock recovery on the phone.

a custom recovery is not needed to be rooted, nor an unlocked bootloader. technically all you need in order to have root acess on a device to its normally gaurded system files is the superuser app,and its matching binary "root" file(for lack of something better to call it).

further questions? :)

This may be the best place to ask my question since the OP is similar to mine.

The only thing I'm interested in is rooting to run Titanium Backup and remove bloatware.

My question is, do I still have to go through HTCDev to do this? From the above posts, I think that is a yes.

The tutorials are bit confusing to me as I am unable to separate what I need to do just to root, and what is need to flash ROMS. What are the minimum steps to just root?

Scotty outlines it pretty well here:

Thanks bc. :D

Yes,you need to do everything in the first post to debloat. Id use the directions to temporarily flash recovery so you are still able to receive OTAs.

Just holler if you have any questions :)

He can pernamently when ota time comes up he can relock bootloader then push the stock ruu back to the phone accept the ots then reroot regardless if he installs amon ra

he can...

but doing so will wipe his data.

leaving the stock recovery on the phone will let it OTA without data loss.

its a good practice IMO to fastboot boot recovery into memory, even when a permanent recovery is installed,as doing so lets backups be restored without a seperate kernel flash.

it is also possible,to simply fastboot flash the stock recovery back in place without running the entire RUU and relocking. it must be done prior to the ota trying to install, however, in order to be affective :)

Scotty85, you mention that you do not need to have a custom recovery or an unlocked bootloader in order to root the rezound. But all the steps I see on how to root look like you do have to unlock it in order to flash the super user files. if i'm mistaken, could you please explain step by step on how to just root without unlocking the bootloader? I to only want root access for backing up app settings.

Thanks

sorry to have mislead you,the comment on not needing an unlocked bootloader was general, not refering to the rezound specifically.

it is possible to install the superuser app and matching binary into /system thru some other exploit. on some devices, the root can even survive reboots. the eris is a good example of this- the majority of eris rooter/romers are still s-on and run everything from stock with root to custom AOSP such as cm7.

unfortunately, however,no exploits currently exist to "temp root" the rezound, and if there were, the root would disapear on reboot since the rezounds emmc and boot image are write protected while locked.

for now,you will have to htcdev unlock, unless other exploits become available. you do not, however, have to permanently install the recovery.

again, sorry for the confusion, and hope that clears it up for ya :)

thanks scotty85, that did clear it up. i just came from the moto droid x2 where we couldn't unlock the bootloader but could get root and flash some roms. so i was just used to that, and wanted to make sure there wasn't an alternative method to just root.

Because rooting now requires a reset, I'm going to wait until ICS gets delivered and then see what the root options are then.

I might have placed this in the wrong spot I see the topics rezound root issues
I had my device rooted I got the ota update I lost my root obviously now I fixed that issue
Now I'm running ics 4.0 an I can't root my root my phone now I tried one click methods and rerooting nothings working I checked I'm still unlocked I tried going in developers tools ans installing Su and Su eng
Help please

the su options in amon are for gingerbread. the files are a lil different for ICS. just download this, and flash it in recovery, after a cache and dalvik cache wipe. :)
