Problems with International Use

Lurker
My wife and I will be going to China for a week. I am hoping to use my Skyrocket to do all of my communicating with our son and daughter via email using Wifi Hot Spots. I'm assuming that if the Wifi Hot Spot is free, then I will be able to communicate for free.

In the USA, it seems that my phone will automatically download emails (even though I am not connected to a Wifi Hot Spot). This means that I am communicating with towers and thus using some of my allotted Data Plan.

So my real problem is this: How do I prevent my phone from automatically downloading data and running up some huge phone bills? In other words, I only want to download data when I know it is not costing me.

Settings/Wireless and Network/Mobile Networks/Data roaming

If this is not checked, you won't have any data connectivity through the mobile network (but you will still able to use wifi).

If you do want data connectivity through the mobile network, but only when you specifically request it, then change your auto sync settings and check data roaming (from above).

Safe travels.

I would suggest putting the phone into airplane mode, and then selectively turning on wi-fi when you need it.

I know I'd feel safer knowing that there is no chance that the phone will start using data (and accidentally giving me an enormous bill)...but thats my OCD, I suppose!
