Problems with replying to a text message

Hello I have a texting problem. I am with 3, and have an HTC Hero which I have recently upgraded to 2.1. My contacts are synced with Google.

When I reply to a text I get the message 'unable to send message after multiple attempts'. On checking the details of the text that I tried to send (pressing and holding the message, then selecting 'View message details') I find the the first digit of my contact's mobile number is not there, thus making it useless. When I then check my contacts in 'People' I find that the number is fine.

If start a text with 'New message' I have no problem.

Does anyone else suffer like this? Does anyone know the reason why, and how to fix it?

Thanks

Just to expand on my earlier message, this situation does not happen with all contacts - only some. It does not seem to matter if the contact is stored as 07*** or +447***.
