Help Program accessing network and draining power - help!

Lurker
Noticed my phone was warm and the battery was getting drained when nothing was in use, i.e. the entire life gets drains in 8 hours or so with no usage. The only way I could fix it is to turn off 'use packet data' and wifi. If either of these are on, some program(not displayed on active applications) accesses the network. How can I fix this so I don't have to turn 'use packet data' on everytime I want to access the network? Thanks!

Hello and welcome to Android Forums, ph4life! :)

I recall this being an issue with the update to the last official release for Gingerbread. Could you please verify the version of Android you are running? Menu>settings>about phone.

There are a couple of things you can try. First is the easiest. Reboot your phone. Power off, pull the battery out for a minute or two and then put it back and start up. If that doesn't fix it, you might need to perform a factory reset. This will put your phone back to the state it was in when you got it, except it will be using the last update so it will be the correct version.

Inless you are rooted and installed some nefarious software, I doubt it's an unlisted app that is using data. More likely the wifi radio get's stuck on hence the battery drain and heat. If you want to double check, install Watchdog Lite and it will monitor and alert you to any apps draining resources.

Thanks for the response lunatic, I'm using version 4.0.3, tried rebooting several times, but I guess I should do the factory reset(lose all my apps and everything, right?) :( Oh well, beats the headaches I'm going through now.

Oh yeah, and I'm not rooted and haven't downloaded any suspcious software to my knowledge, just a few from the play store.

It's been so long since I was running stock on my S2 that I don't quite recall what options were available with the recovery menu, but (if available) you might try clearing the cache first.

As for "losing" your apps, you will need to reinstall them and setup your screens again, but it's not that hard. On of the things I have done in the pass was to use appbrain to sync the apps, then when the phone was reset, appbrain can push the apps back. Just a suggestion.
