Root Protected Apps problem with Velocity 1.1

Yes, I had. Wiping phone data - that sounds destructive. It won't trash all my settings for the phone, will it (contacts, favorites, and such)?

I imagine your history, ringtones, settings, favs and such would be gone. Make a nandroid beforehand just in case. If it doesn't fix it, at least you can return to your current state with all saved data intact.

I'd really rather not have to go through all that just to check for an update that I don'e even WANT anyway. :) But thanks for the suggestion.

I'll wait and see if the update notification returns. It is rare that I need to dial those characters, and if I do it does seem to work if I program them into a contact listing, and THEN dial it. I just can't type them directly into the dialer for whatever reason.

DUH!!!!!! Guess what I just realized!? The reason it wasn't working is because I was trying to enter the * and # FROM THE QWERTY KEYBOARD, not the on-screen phone dialing keyboard. It DOES work just fine from there. I feel like an idiot. :) I had just done the cache clearing and decided to try it again, but for some reason I did not slide out the keyboard (which I almost always do when using the Ally because I have big hands).

SO.........

I dialed the checkin sequence and got "checkin succeeded" in the notification area. But so far no other notifications. This may have actually worked! :)

Okay so here is a step by step of what I did.

1. Using root explorer find build.prop and long press.
2. Choose edit text.
3. Change value of ro.build.version.sdk to a value of 8.
4. Reboot.
5. Go to settings-about phone-system updates
6. Initiate update.
7. Click to reboot.
8. When it doesn't reboot hold power to reboot manually.
9. Update won't reappear!

This is how I got it done for two Ally's.

Hopefully you noticed my edited post above where I explained why it wasn't working. I think I have it covered now. Thanks!

I've mock installed this severall times on my Ally and the notification seems to keep coming back regardless.

Zoandroid: Did you have any luck installing the "Upgrade utility" before going through the "installation" process. I've actually not tried that yet, I would do it if I know it take the notification away though.

And to clear the market cache, tattedman left out a step, you have to go into Settings>>Applications>>Manage Applications, then tap on the ALL button at the top of the screen, then you should be able to find Market in you list, tap on it and you should see the button for "clear cache".

I did. Step by step was for the community.

Great minds think alike! :D I too like to clarify things and leave a bread crumb trail for those who follow later (sometimes much later). Being in that position myself (the one following much later) has taught me to appreciate such gestures when researching a solution. :)

Yes, I was able to install the Upgrade Utility for Ally last night. But after that I couldn't force the update notification to appear, even dialing the *#*#CHECKIN#*#* number. It said I connected, but never offered up the ZVE update. I hope that means I'm covered. But it also did not tell me my Ally was "up to date" either. So I have only a 50% chance of having been successful. One more reason I always like to see "progress bars" on everything. I hate being left to wonder.

I figured out that added step while clearing the Market cache, although mine had nothing in it when I got there. The clear cache option was 'grayed out' as I recall.
