Protecting Messages

I have a new HTC Desire. Use the "messages" frequently. I feel uncomfortable when people read my messages.
Is there any way I can protect my messages using a password?

You could download Handcent Sms from the market, it's a more customisable version of the stock messages app, it's free and you can set passwords to make it secure etc.

Thanks! That's a nice app.. Any more suggestions please, Sorry i'm looking for the best alternative. Isn't it not possible without any third party applications?

Update: Handcent is very coarse. The interface is not as elegant or smooth as the in built "Messages" application. Uninstall-ed.

There's no password for photos or texts without a 3rd party app. However you can set an overall password on the phone to unlock it by 3x3 pattern grid in the settings. Other than that you'll just have to keeping deleting your texts lol

Why not just not let people use your phone ? Or lock your phone with code / pattern if you leave it lying about ? Seems like the simple / sensible thing to do....
