Protecting with a case/skin?

For the LG Ally, does anyone have any suggestions on whether I should or shouldn't get anything? I went to my local mall to check out both the hard plastic & rubberized plastic cases...to be honest, they looked & felt pretty cheap. And the starting price of $15-$20 was a real turnoff too. I mean, if they at least felt sturdy enough that I thought they'd protect my phone if it were dropped, then I could see paying that kind of money.

I know they are far cheaper on Ebay, but I can't imagine they're any sturdier. As the LG Ally goes, is it pretty much just a matter of dressing it up? I'm really about 50/50 on the issue of getting something for protection or just for looks.

The eBay cases are probably the same quality that you saw in the mall, but yes, MUCH cheaper. For a $5 or less case on eBay, don't think about it so much, just pick one you like an go for it. No, they aren't made of titanium, but when your phone drops, the case takes the bump, that's all it needs to do. Or you can shell out for one that is supposed to be "Sturdy", but I don't think it's worth it. The cheap ones do the job just fine. Nothing will survive dropping it off a 5 story building, but for when you get out of your car and forget that your phone was in your lap and it goes crashing into the street, or other small drops, the basic cheap case does just fine. And yes they do dress it up as a secondary benefit. I really like my metallic red one which seems to go with the whole "Iron Man" theme that this phone was initially associated with.

I have a BodyGlove case that I like, and it does a good job taking the bumps and bruises for the phone. The top piece wasn't staying put (the little tabs to hold it on were bent almost immediately), so I just put a very thin strip of double-sided tape on the inside of the case to stabilize it and I haven't looked back. Other than that, it is very sturdy, and does bulk up the phone quite a bit, but I think the trade-off is worthwhile.

I'm also very fond of this little pouch: Amazon.com: Sea to Summit Round Neoprene Pouch: Sports & Outdoors

The XS fits the Ally very nicely, and its great for keeping your phone safe while its hanging out in a purse, backpack or cargo pocket. Its also an extra layer of padding for the times when my cat feels the need to toss it off the desk on to the floor.

I appreciate both of your feedback. The BodyGlove does look sturdier (which could just be an illusion due to its texture), but (and I know this is somewhat silly) there are no colors to choose from...lol. And like blackmetalbuick, I'm feeling partial to the metallic red if I'm going to go with a case.

What I'd really like to do is have a custom case done with the Operation Mindcrime logo, but it seems like a stretch to get that done. I was thinking as an alternative to that, using a clear case, and then just printing out & slapping a sticker on the phone itself, so it would show through the clear case. Potential downsides to that are that I'd then have a sticker on the phone itself & that the clear cases aren't rubberized (I prefer the feel of rubberized vs plain plastic).

Its still up for debate. If anyone has any further feedback based on my little ramblings here, please feel free. :-)

Ok, I finally made a decision and went with a rubberized hard case from Ebay for $4.95 in RED. It comes with an "easy removal tool" too. At least its cheap enough that if it does break, then at least I didn't lose much money on it.

I wonder if it's the same "rubberized" case I got from Amazon. Mine was cheap and the tabs broke. I never bothered to replace it.

The ally is sturdy in its self, i have dropped my phone NUMEROUS times on to rocks, concrete and soon and so forth... the glass has amazing strength and the back of the phone wont break. I would recommend a case for looks only. I might get a screen protector for scratches but once again thats only cosmetic my phone is not protected at all and i have had it since october and it is fine, but dont wash you phone while doing laundry ;) not that sturdy lol.

The tabs can be a problem on the cheaper cases, but just don't take it on and off more times than you need to, and definitely use that little tool instead of just brute force to release the locking tabs. Notice one of the replies up above said even the fully branded BodyGlove cases do the same thing with the tabs breaking, so again, no reason to really spend anymore than a few bucks on eBay. And also mentioned above, if the tabs ever do break, a little double-sided tape will keep the case on.

That's encouraging to hear. I do tend to drop things (my previous cell included) and I was a bit concerned.

And funny you should mention that. I was in a pool for 1/2 an hour once with my cell in my pocket before realizing I forgot to take it out...drowned the poor thing.

I would reccomend the rubberized case from Verizon. It is $17 (I paid that for it anyway) but the price is worth it I bought a case off eBay for $8, but it quickly broke and was useless. The rubber case on the otherhand is well made and reliable.

Just got my case in the mail today. Have to say, it does look very nice. Bright & shiny candy-apple red color, tabs all fit nicely, easy to remove with the included plastic tool. I can get to all the ports & buttons, the keyboard slides out without anything getting in the way. I suppose time will be the true test, specifically if I drop the phone & the case breaks, but to be honest the case does seem much sturdier than the ones I saw at the mall.

Speaking of dropping my phone, I dropped it a couple days ago. It fell out of my pocket while I was leaning down & it fell about 2 1/2 or 3 feet. No damage.

Oh, and if anyone's curious which no-name brand I got, I google'd the UPC number & Google Products brought me here...
