Help Public network problem! Please help!

Bought my Desire a couple of days ago. Everything seems to work perfectly. I've set up a home network and it works smoothly. But when I go out and try to connect to a free public network the phone says that its "connected" but at the same time when i try to open a web page it says that "connection failed" . weather widget and other internet related apps also seem to have trouble with the connection . Please help!

Are you sure it's a public wifi connection? Or have you just stumbled upon one that your phone is telling you is 'open' ?
For instance, here in the UK, there are 100's of open BT (British Telecom) points, but you need to supply a code to log onto them.
