Pull me back from the ledge

I'm a big camera guy as far as wanting a good one on a phone. I have the S3 right now, and it takes great pictures (after a learning curve on focus). I do find myself learning toward good pictures with faster capture though given my daughter never stands still.

Can anyone tell me how it captures motion? I have seen really mixed reviews on that part. I hear that it does really well with moving targets as long as the light is decent?

As far as color saturation I use google plus and the auto enhancement might be the ticket for me on that portion of things.... But it needs to at least be in focus and correct colors.

I should mention my other choice would be an HTC one... Cause I'm tired of samsung software and LG is too heavy on the customizing imho.

I never said the camera is on the same level as other smartphones. I just said the phone takes decent pictures, and its not as bad as people make it out to be. Or the perception people have. Everything around the flowers is blurry because I focused on the flowers on purpose.

A picture with lower light. I will say these photos look GREAT viewing them on the phone.

lol I actually was saying the flowers themselves were blurry and unfocussed :p

Even the forest picture is pretty awful with a lot of noise and some odd exposure (I guess?) issue thats almost making the picture look dirty.

Dont get me wrong the Moto X has a camera and it takes pictures, but its worse then most of the 8MP samsung, Sony, Apple and HTC cams from two years ago.

I really get wanting to defend something that you purchased but Moto X does not have a good camera (even for a smartphone). Maybe a software/firmware update could help things, theoretically the hardware isnt bad it just was not implemented well.

Again, the camera is not good. That is not new news. And I never said it was good. I don't think you read very well. The ONLY thing I am saying is, it can be used take average and sometimes a little above average photos, and you need to know some settings to get the most out of it.

Should I say it again? The camera is bad and its the worst feature of the phone. Good? Or should I repeat it once more.

lol no need to make it personal I think I was more responding to the:

Thats a little different from your last sentence:p I was also voicing my own frustration a little because they had hyped up the camera to be something special when it turned out to be such a disappointment. I was all set to get a AT&T Moto X until I got to test the cam. love everything else about the phone (form factor, screen, battery, call quality etc)

I'm *hoping* a firmware update will solve a lot of the camera's woes. The hardware should be capable of much better pictures. As I am on Verizon I have the luxury of waiting a bit for MotoMaker and the 32GB option while Motorola works on fixing this problem.

I feel like I have seen these heated discussions about every phone's camera :)

But it does seem a bit washed out doesn't it? I've only seen noise that was really terrible in one of my shot's in the post your pics thread (the dalek v android pic). But the color does seem very washed out sometimes.

I may have to try that JB+ camera

So are you saying then that you either are not getting the Moto X or are in fact getting something else simply on the basis of the camera quality in the X?

I ask because of course the entire purpose of this thread was my own internal struggle with the X and the good vs. bad of the phone.

In my mind, my priorities were as follows.

1. It's a phone - it should be a good phone first and foremost. (Moto always wins this discussion)

2. I'd like a decent camera. (Low score here)

3. Form factor and size. (Win)

4. Battery (Win)

5. Display (Win)

6. Software experience (Win - as far as I can tell)

So 5 outta 6 ain't bad right?

OK Here are my top choices in no particular order, any of these stand out to anyone?

I will be ordering one of these awesome little 32GB beauties in the next few days (cause I am weak) just thought I'd share my options on custom themes.

I personally like the black/blue/white accents

I prefer my phone pretty plain though, if your personality is more "out there" or outgoing you may end up choosing one of the others :)

It's funny right? Like I want more options to choose from (especially more front options) but even with the options I have it's like overload.

Having trouble deciding what I'd live with the easiest.

:D

Good problem to have.

Soooo I went through the checkout process, and I noticed a few things.

1. Did you know that you can buy a custom Moto X at the off-contract price?(I ask because I was under the impression you could not purchase a customized Moto X at the non-contract price)

2. There is a place to enter a promo code. Where in the world does one obtain a promo code?

3. They are still including the Moto Skip with purchase for free.

So anyone have a promo code up in this b*tch? :D :smokingsomb:

No seriously does anyone have a promo code?

Compared to its own brethren though, I was not impressed with the Moto X. I played around with one for a few days and I was always annoyed with the amount of noise and color accuracy issues I ran into (even for a Smartphone cam). It was weird too because sometimes it would take a nice shot and then two seconds later the next shot would be out of focus and washed out. Not sure what was going on there but it happened enough to get very annoying.

I was playing around with a LG G2 the other day and wow what a camera. the OIS is really well done and there are no issues with color accuracy, focus etc and it even did fairly well in lower light situations indoors. Heres to hoping the G2 OIS cam makes it into the Nexus 5, if it does that could be a very well rounded phone for the price esp considering it comes in frame smaller then the Nexus 4.

I have to agree - so far - about the Moto X camera. I've used HTC's for years and their cameras IMO were magnificent for smart phone pic. I'm not a pro by any means but want them to look good. Great color, etc. BUT the other problems with HTC's any my annoyance with them finally caught up. So far I love my Moto X. I haven't done a side-by-side comparison of cameras yet but Fall colors are almost here and that's a perfect time.

I do admit the LG G2 is really tempting but it's too big for daily carrying around in my job. Although if the Nexus 5 is close to it, I may reconsider.

OK I made my decision (about the X vs. the G2) but I gotta say this, in all fairness. The G2 is not that big. Actually it's not a big phone at all. I have the Motorola Atrix HD, and the G2 is negligibly different in size. Seriously.

It looks big screen wise but in the hand, or in the pocket, not a big phone at all. Smaller than the SGS4 - same size as the HTC One.

It's very deceptive.

The LG G2 (5.45 x 2.79 x 0.35 in) is almost exactly the same size as the Droid Maxx (5.41 x 2.80 x 0.33 in), and both are larger than the SGS4 (5.38 x 2.75 x 0.31 in) and the HTC One (5.41 x 2.69 x 0.37 in).

Atrix HD is 5.26 x 2.75 x 0.33 in.

It must be at least a little deceptive. ;)

Yes 10ths and 100ths of an inch are HUGE discrepancies

I believe I said NEGLIGIBLE differences, not IDENTICAL in size.
:D

Seriously go and pick it up (the LG G2) and compare it to the other phones, your phone ... it's BIGGER than the Moto X (Noticeably Larger - probably several 10ths of an inch :D) but not bigger than the mainstream phones of today.

yea unless a software update were to come out that significantly improved the quality of the Moto X camera I dont plan on getting it.

My priorities are actually a little different then yours and my usage probably reflects that.

1. battery (if a phone cant last me through a day of normal usage then its a no go)

2. Camera (I often photograph my work as a prototype machinist and I don't carry a P&S so a solid phone camera is pretty important)

3. Form factor size (dont want a monster phone, G2 is too big for me)

4. Software experience

5. Display

6. Its a phone - could care less, I logged about 20 mins of call time last month and 2.6 gb of data (All but 200mbs of which was via WIFI) lol

Nexus 5 is looking very promising if it has the G2 cam... its about the right size (only a couple MM larger then the Moto X), although pushing it and should have a pretty solid user exp with the CPU/GPU/memory hardware its supposedly packing.

if you can get around the camera on the Moto X its a great phone though. I really wanted to get it but the Moto X just wont work with my requirements. But yea long and short of it is I'm not getting the Moto X because of a poor quality camera.

Also this is a great tool for comparing phone sizes

Well, it looks like the update is starting to roll out. Seems like T-Mo was first to get it and per the review/comparisons, the camera is MUCH better than the original. Hopefully, this will start to trickle out to other carriers ASAP.
