Purchasing phone at VZW store question

When you buy a phone at the store on a NEW contract, do they put the cost of the phone on your first bill or are you forced to pay for it right then and there?

I'm a little low on funds this week, this is why I ask.

I'd like to walk into the store tomorrow and walk out with an X
 
I am pretty sure that on a new contract they would ask for the money up front, and understandably so. The company knows almost nothing about you at that point. I would suggest asking the manager though, they may help you out. They would really like to build interest off this device, so they may be more willing to be flexible.

Yeah, that does make sense and I understand that.

I was thinking they did this with my wife but it may have been the early termination fee that I'm thinking of.
 
To my knowledge, you should be able to tack on phone and accessory purchases onto your bill. However, I do not know if this is the case with new customers/contracts.

I believe they require immediate payment for phone activation and of course will run a credit check before they actually offer you service.
