Root Purpose of partitioning the SD card??

Hello!

So I'm trying to take my time with all this stuff...I'd rather understand what I'm doing first before blindly trying to follow a tutorial....and so far, I can't seem to find anything 'out there' that explains what the point of partitioning my SD card is. My EVO is rooted, and I've got clockwordmod/ROM manager installed successfully. At this point, there seems a common recommendation to partition, but none of the tutorials explain why.

Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Sure, it's generally used for something called a2sd. It's used for moving your apps to the sdcard. It's not the same as froyo apps2sd, which moves only supported apps to /sdcard/.android_secure. The benefit is that this partition you create is in any of the ext filesystem types, which linux supports. It means you can safely move all apps. Also, having separate partition helps when plugging the phone in to your computer as a drive. If you'd like to read more about it, here's the thread for a2sd:
