Member
Hi All,

Well, I'm planning to buy a droid, but have a query-

Does Galaxy 551 supports push email for multiple email accounts such as gmail, yahoomail, etc? Or Do we need to synh everytime when we want to read emails on the device? Can push email work for vanity domain like yahoo small business emails?

Thanks
Mansaw

Yes it does
You can manually set the sync time or push it .
There are usually two apps for mail.
Alternatively you can use K-9 mail app to sync different mail accounts in a collective inbox.

Btw it's an android .Droid is a brand name of Verizon for their android lineup .

Thanks!

Could you give your views on Galaxy 551 performance in terms of battery, keyboard and other stuff?

Thanks again
Manish

Keyboard : Awesome
Battery : Normal for smartphone.A bit less for a phone.
Android 2.2 performance : Excellent
Smartphone performance :Excellent compared to iOS and Symbian
OS : Excellent

Company Support: Pathetic.Poor.Drivel.

If you can live with the pathetic customer care and software support known as samsung ,it's a great phone. And you have to live with the fact that samsung is never going to update Galaxy 551 to 2.3 Gingerbread due to their amateur ,short sighted, amnesic, snobbish and blind policy.

It's a good phone and the keyboard is sweet .

Oh..Ok...so phone is better but company service is not!

Then, which company is better---HTC, Sony....any other option? Nokia is best in all aspects but it is not Andriod OS and future of Symbian OS is also bleak.

Thanks
Manish

Actually it is dependent on phone model and Care centre .SOme people have good exp. from samsung .Sony has poor range in lower Mid end phones.HTC phones are generally favorable .
The USP of this phone is best mid range phone with Physical keyboard,
The physical keyboard is awesome .
It boils down to personal choice .
2.2 to 2.3 is not as massive jump as 2.1 to 2.2.

Hi Karan,

Thanks again!

Well, I think company is going to stop Galaxy 551 as it is out of stock in most of the stores. Could you suggest any other good device?

BTW how is the resolution and screen display of 551?

Regards
Manish

240x400 resolution and brighter display than optimus one

One of the best mid range phones is Dell XCD 35 aka Orange Sanfrancisco aka ZTE blade.

It is a beauty :D.Official Cyanogenmod support too !!Strong Dev support .
If you want better cam ,go for HTC Wildfire S.
Stay away from Ace .
If you can just stretch budget to 15K INR ,with Motorola Defy you will have a high end phone with Adobe flash/AIR support.

Ace- you mean Samsung Galaxy Ace. Right?

I may stretch my budget upto 20k if I get all the required features in one model(and if I don't get it in any low range models).

How is HTC Desire Z?

20K is a difficult decision
HTC Desire Z is awesome phone
HTC's brand and support
CyanogenMod support
QWERTY
A8 cortex so Adobe flash and AIR compatibility

Only other phone in sub 20K is Google Nexus S .
For only one reason .No need of companies for further updates in OS.
Updates straight from Google.

But you definitely cant go wrong with Desire Z

Sounds great about HTC desire Z. Could you tell about its price?

Well, my priorities to select a model are:
Need to have-
Push email
Document editor(Excel, Word, etc.)
Atleast 3" capacitive touch screen
Good looks, design
Social networking, IMs
Good Internet experience
Good apps to improve work and personal life productivity
Low SAR value
Business related apps

Nice to have-
Physical QWERTY(actually it is need to have but choice is very limited)
Multimedia features
Front camera

All android phones =satisfy the priorities
Best multimedia features are available for phones having Cortex A8 processors/V7 instruction set
Front Camera and QWERTY are well mutually exclusive it seems.

HTC Desire Z is the best QWERTY phone .(Flipkart had it around 19.5K)
In 20K The Nexus S rules the roost for front cam ones.
Around 15K Motorola Defy is good

Below that
At 10.5K Dell XCD 35 is the best mid range phone

Thanks Karan.

Well, I checked for Galaxy 551 in the stores and it is out of stock in most of the stores. Even if any store manage to get this phone is it prudent to purchase it when it is not easily available(may be company has stopped production) and which is one year old? OR to go for any newly launched one?

To tell you the absolute truth .Samsung's customer care is pathetic. And their software upgrades are erratic.I WONT RECOMMEND ANY SAMSUNG PHONE

Samsung like other companies use market research to give software upgrades .
551 was knocked off the 2.3 upgrades soley due to poor sales .
Now Galaxy Ace and Galaxy mini have taken the place of new mid-ends for samsung
That leaves Galaxy 3 ,galaxy 551 and Galaxy 5 .You may as well say that the software support from company side has ended
On dev side there are only 4-5 devs max worldwide for 551(including me )
Technically samsung supported this phone for only 4-5 months

If you buy a new samsung phone ,two months later they can say that we have stopped support for this phone and give some outlandish reason.
It wouldnt have mattered if there were CyanogenMod support

On the other hand LG Optimus One is dated and they will still receive the 2.3 upgrade .That will be 2 major updates for that phone

Dell XCD 35 has 2.2 and wont be upgradable to 2.3 .however it has native CyanogenMod support so you can flash a new firmware to go 2.3 .Further the developer community is strong for it.

And Lastly HTC .You just cant go wrong with any HTC phone due to splendid reputation and again CyanogenMod support.Even the low class HTC Tattoo has gingerbread in form of CyanogenMod

Build-wise HTC phones have best build quality and samsung the poorest

Samsung is more focused on it's own OS ,BADA OS and The Galaxy S lineup .

The only Samsung Phone I recommend is Google Nexus S since the software support is from google .

And the sad thing is phone vendors always recommend samsung in India for android phones.

The ARMv7 processor based phones like HTC Desire/S/Z/HD,Motorola Milestone 2/Defy ,LG Optimus Black ,Google Nexus S ,
Samsung Galaxy S/SL will provide the maximum functionality

Sadly with Adobe AIR and Flash unavailable for the ARMv6VFP the support for mid end phones will slowly end .They are capable phones will still offer the smartphone functionality (All your priorities). Dont expect to run latest apps or games)

These Phones include Samsung Galaxy 3/5/551/Ace/Gio/Fit/Pop ,LG optimus one ,Dell XCD 35

The dual core phones are not recommended until the release of Android 2.4(4) Ice Cream Sandwich

Thanks a lot Karan for taking out time to write a detailed reply!

I'll explore HTC mobiles now and bother you again about it ;)

In the meanwhile could you please elaborate the followings....

Well I am one of the developers of a Custom ROM .Arkas for Galaxy 551 .
It is an after market ROM based on Android 2.2 which adds additional functionality like pre-rooting ,overclocked processor,ext3/4 File system
Plus One more dev is working to port gingerbread/CyanogenMod 7.0 to Galaxy 551.
The beauty of android is that we dont have depend on companies for specific updates .
So the strength of an Android phone depends on the developer support .
Before buying and android

About CyanogenMod

Well words fail to describe those dudes.

HTC phones are not good battery performance wise. Users of HTC are experiencing quick dry out of battery.

As you say Samsung is not good, I think I have to go for Symbian and Nokia is the best, undisputed mobile manufacturer.

Actually all Android phones have poor battery life in beginning. After 1 month the battery life increase plus you get a hang of system you can stretch the battery .Usually n00bs and first time users(including me) complain of battery in the beginning .

Symbian is a dead OS .Android vs Symbian is Human vs God.Symbian can no longer match to the Android outbreak.Personally I have used almost all types of Phone OS. But by far Android is the best OS .Three years ago Symbian maybe.

Though buying a phone will be your personal choice.:D.In India most people tend to Nokia due to pre concieved concepts. It's hard for people to believe that Operating systems can affect a phone .

Androids are smatphones to the Core.

OK. So Nokia is out then....what I now see is Nexus in mid range but I can't find it on Samsung's website. One is there but for 28k.

Sometime I incline to Galaxy Fit- your comments on it please!

Sometime I think I should go and buy Galaxy 551.

....or wait for a new model to launch.

Nope Dell XCD 35 is better than Fit .It is known as ZTE Blade in this Forum.
Flipkart.com: Samsung Google Nexus S: Mobile is for 20K !!! same piece :)

Definitely Dont go for Fit .you are better off with 551 than Fit.:)

If you are adamant on lower-midrange
then
Dell XCD 35 > Wildfire S > LG Optimus One > Galaxy Ace > Galaxy 551
Or
the sweet Middle
Motorola Defy
Or
The Supreme Phone Google Nexus S

Hmm...pretty clear now...however you are suggesting companies(Motorola, HTC, DELL) who really do not have much presence in Indian market. Samsung has good presence now.

Google has launched Nexus few years back but I think it was a super flop. Why so? And how the Nexus S is different and improved?

Because Nexus was a developer phone not consumer phone .It is still popular among developers .
Nexus S has a solid software support plus it uses a no frills UI so it will be faster.

If you want Indian androids then go for Spice M140 .1Ghz V7 processor and you can get it around 13K. It is Huwaei Ideos X6 rebranded. The best thing about Huwei phones is that the spare parts are easily available in India even in small towns (like maruti cars) ..

Dell has a decent presence in metro .HTC is very popular among smatphone users .You are right about moto ,they dont have presence.
