Putting phone into silent/vibrate mode

Hi All

What is the quickest/easiest way of putting phone into silent/vibrate mode,
from the screen being off.

I have a widget that allows me to do that once I wake the phone up and unlock it.
But looking for some way of not having to wake the phone up.

Thanks Pep

I haven't see away to do this without waking it up. Some common ways without having to unlock it:

Wake it up and press the volume down key until it's on silent.
Lock screen with ring/vibrate toggle - swipe to enable vibrate mode.

Even with my screen off (now i dont know if its natural behaviour or the rom im on) with screen off, ringer/music can be turned up/down  Galaxy s3

I think this might be the only/best way.

I can change the volume with the screen off while playing music.

On a Droid Maxx the volume keys do nothing until the screen is active.

What phone are we talking about.

ATM Galaxy S3 and the volume rocker does nothing while screen is off,
but I'm about to get the Note 3:D:D

On Galaxy phones, even when locked, hold the power key for a short while then the power options will appear along with the mute and vibrate keys.
