I just got a captivate today and havent seen the puzzle piece screen yet. I love the phone and im sure there is already a post for this but a point in the right direction would be mighty helpful ?

When you're using TouchWiz (the stock launcher), the puzzle piece screen shows up when you miss a call, get a text, etc. You move the peice in "place" and that action unlocks the screen and takes you to the related app.
If you're not sure what a launcher is, then you're probably using the stock launcher.

will the puzzle piece show up if i have an actual lock screen in place or must that be turned off?

It overlays the stock TouchWiz lock screen. It's all enabled by default so just have someone text you so you can check it out.
Launcher (such as TouchWiz) is immaterial. I useLauncher Pro, and it works with that as well.

Sorry, I had confused myself. This is true. It's the TouchWiz lock screen that matters.
