Root [Q] Help. Desire not booting after theme installed

eeiieeiio

Newbie
I installed a neondroid theme from the SD through recovery, rebooted my phone, and it won't boot to the wallpaper.
It's supposed to show the joker with s-off on it for a few seconds then go off then my network provider shows then my wallpaper or desktop.
It shows the joker then a black line appears on screen.

Any ideas how I can get my phone functioning again??

nandroid restore or reflash the rom. Themes are only compatible with the Exact ROM AND VERSIOn created for.

Hi,
i didn't do a nand backup sorry. Is it possible to download a copy of someone's nand for my model and install it through recovery mode?

Is it possibe to reflash while in boot mode?

And have somebody else's apps, personal data, google login on your phone, and none of your own apps and data? This is not the solution you are looking for...

As the others have said, just reflash the ROM - assuming you have a custom ROM installed. If you haven't, let us know and we'll see what we can come up with.

I take it that means you hadn't installed a custom ROM either?

So had you made any app/data backups (e.g. Titanium Backup)? If you have, then you can install whatever ROM you like, then restore those data afterwards. Read the rooting guide and faq in the "all about rooting" sticky post (red link in my sig) for instructions. The "How do I flash a custom ROM?" section of the FAQ includes the link XDA Developers - Desire Index, which is the best place to find a ROM.

However, what if you haven't made a backup, or haven't recently? Installing most ROMs requires a factory reset (because the settings generally aren't compatible, so they won't boot otherwise), but that erases your data, so if you haven't made a backup you probably don't want to do that. Now you may have no choice - there are no promises here. But if you don't have adequate backups, there's one option that might work: flash a ROM that is compatible with your original software. If you can get it to boot, you can install backup apps (such as Titanium), back up your data, take a nandroid, then it's up to you after that.

So, do you know what software your phone was running? If not, at least the android version? From your radio version I reckon your phone is GSM (i.e. you have a SIM card), and I assume you were running Froyo, in which case you could try flashing one of teppic74's ROMs. These are rooted, stock Froyo, so very close to the original software (without any network branding). Pick the one closest to your software version (if you know it), but one that does not include a radio (don't want to flash a radio right now). Copy to your SD card (with a card reader, or boot into recovery, connect the phone to a computer, and use the mount/storage menu in recovery to mount the card on USB then copy the file). Then select "install zip from sd" from the recovery menu, select the file and install it. Do not wipe the phone first.

Now let's be clear: I cannot guarantee this will work. I'm assuming you are running rooted stock software on a GSM phone, and hence hoping that this ROM is close enough that you can flash it without wiping. I'm also assuming that you are not using a2sd with an ext partition (because most people install that as part of a custom ROM, which I don't think you've done). So a lot of assumptions here, and if any of these do not match your actual situation then please don't proceed, but let us know what your actual setup was. But if you have just rooted (and S-Offed!) and not installed a ROM then I think there's a reasonable chance this will work - teppic's ROM was the first I ever flashed, and I did it without a wipe, so it is possible.

Your a lifesaver mate. I'll have to be more careful now.
I noticed the superuser app is different from the one Revoked put on, should'nt be any different.
Also the system wanted to do an upgrade. When I let it after booting the screen showed an exclamation mark, update failed! Is there a workaround for this?
System upgrade to: 2.29.405.2

Phone Info
Model number: HTC Desire A8181
Android version: 2.0
Kernel version:2.5.32.15-g6a358a9
htc-kernel@and18-2 #1
Build Number:2.10.405.2 CL226611 release-keys
Software number: 2.10.405.2

The icon may be different for the SU app, but that's all.

I'm afraid another rule is "never accept an over the air update on a rooted phone"! The results are unpredictable (depend on the update), but it's very likely to break something.

So what's the current state of the phone: are you able to boot into android, or stuck looking at this exclamation mark?

Edit: To be clear - if all you got was a message saying the update failed, but the phone is running, then no biggie. However, I'd install Titanium Backup and back everything up now, in case some subtle problem emerges and we need to do something more radical to fix it.

I just clicked back and the recovery screen showed so i just rebooted as normal. And took off the tick on system update.
Is there an update i can download for a rooted phone, or doesn't it matter?

No and Yes. Custom roms are updated themselves by their developer. Just look on their relevent pages at xda.
I have downloaded tepic74's 2.29.405.5 ROM which will update the 2.10.405.2 INIT.D ROM v2.0 i used yesterday to restore my phone. I'll do a titanium backup first.
