Query re brick bug before rooting

Hi,

I'm taking my first tentative steps into the work of rooting and rom upgrades, I've read the very informative guides on the site but I have one concern before I consider rooting my i9100 S2 and its the brick bug which my S2 is susceptible to "checked with eMMC check".

I am currently running ICS 4.0.3 "I9100O2ULP4" but because my S2 is currently on UK O2 I am still waiting for them to release their official upgrade to 4.0.4 which all the other UK carriers have already released.

I am considering rooting and installing JB but even after reading through the forum I am still unclear as to under which circumstances the brick bug becomes an issue.

Can the brick bug problem occur during rooting; changing the rom or both ?

Thanks in advance

John

Welcome to the forum John.

The brick bug only comes into play when performing a wipe with cwm recovery with certain kernels so it will not be a factor when rooting with Odin.

I'd root using this guide
http://androidforums.com/galaxy-s2-international-all-things-root/482994-rooting-galaxy-s2-dummies-guide.html

Then straight after without doing any wipes put your phone back into download mode and flash the tar version of siyah 5.0.1 with Odin
SiyahKernel for S2 & S3 | "One kernel to rule them all"

This will ensure your kernel is brick bug free and will allow you to perform the wipes necessary to flash a custom rom.

I've moved this to all things root:)

I have a question I've never found an answer for, and it is a complete and utter newbie question.

Can an unsullied, brand new SGSII be rooted using, say the latest Siyah (obviously a .tar Odin flash) rather than flashing the "ready rooted" CF stock kernel first. I would have thought yes, but I don't actually know.

I have a theory that it will work but not tried it yet. I will do it when I install JB for the first time. Ie.

Download an official Sammy JB ROM from SamMobile
Run Odin
Untick auto-reboot
Flash firmware
Tick autoboot
Flash Siyah .tar
When rebooting, boot into upload mode
Flash neat (also installs Siyah)
Reboot

Now in theory, this should install all your CWM recovery etc. and auto-root as Siyah (and Dori) claims to auto-root in ExTweaks/STweaks

Like I said, I've not tried this yet but its worth a shot

If it dont boot, then just do it the old fashioned way!
:)

Thanks Hawker old stick for that!

Like the old boy, I too am not sure about this. In fact I missed a golden opportunity to try this out when I moved from LPI to LPY the other day and chose to flash a stock Samsung LPY firmware, with stock, un-rooted, kernel, first before moving over to NEAT LPY with a clean installation.

It should work, well if the gs3 is anything to go by. There was someone who was having trouble with the cfroot kernel so I suggested flashing siyah with Odin and it worked fine. Although I suppose still not definitive as there could be differences between the devices.
