Help query regarding backup and google account

I just got the LG optimus one p500, just 24 hours ago
I did not set up the google account when the salesboy booted the phone in the shop because my GPRS(i don have 3G enabled yet) was inactive that time.

It is showing error when i try to set up the google account "error in connection"
although my GPRS/edge is active cuz i can access websites on the browser.

solution as suggested by websites was to master reset
but since it will remove the applications as well, i am concerned

I already have the backup of my contacts and sms in my other phone, so don care abt that.
although i manually made the back up of the card in my pc by removing the card.

so 2 questions
1-is master reset helpful in eradicating this error regarding google account
2-can i get the lost applications by simply copy pasting them to the phone.

i am not sure abt master reset, but your gmail should access if your gprs is on, you can verify if data conn is on by seeing the small bar on top, where you should see an "E" with up and down arrow , that shows gprs is on,
you can start gprs by pulling down notification bar and touching the phone icon
