Root Question about Amon Ra

my trackball refuses to work in 1.6.2 recovery, but it will everywhere else. anyway, can i just run the trackball optional .apk over the original or is there other steps involved? ( as in, i have the TBO app, can i just run it without wiping the old one out?) i cant do any wipes or resets since the trackball wont navigate the recovery image, and ive never tried using the sdk/adb process with the computer before

It all depends on whether or not you are running a custom ROM and which one.

If you are still on a stock or near-stock (xtrSENSE and a few others) ROM, you can run the one-click-tbo.apk (jcase's tweaked 1-click) app.

If you are not running a stock-ish ROM, you can use Scenario 3 (it looks harder than it really is...I just put a lot of details in there so you don't have to guess about a step).

Let me know if you have any questions.

Cheers!

edit: you could also try (very carefully) the USB cable moving trick; the proximity of the trackball assembly and the USB connector on the phone might allow you to carefully and slightly move the USB cable around to see if a certain position might prod the trackball to start moving in custom recovery. Its probably this proximity that partially leads to trackball issues anyway and you might stand a better chance than some because your trackball appears to function already outside of custom recovery. That won't get you the alternate trackball recovery installed, but it might allow you a few additional recovery sessions.

ok thank you for the reply. ill give it a shot. assuming i do manage to do something wrong, i can still use my computer to run adb commands and wipe the old recovery and install the new one, correct?

edit: if it helps, i am on condemned v21

ok so i followed the directions of method 3 until extracting the g-script file. im assuming it is a program i need to run, only it wont run. in astro, it has an icon the same as all my other ROMs, and when i short press it, it goes to a folder icon named gscript. when i press that, i get a screen with what appears to be a file named gscript-sa, and another file named tools. when i press the gscript file a message pops up saying file type sh not found. in the tools folder are 3 files, in order, named flash_image, md5info, and recovery-RA-eris blah blah blah (name of recovery image). in your sticky thread i see nothing about what to do here. did i do something wrong or did i miss a step?

Apologies, 01daksport, you did fine and didn't miss a step--apparently I did, where I didn't have you download and install the Gscript Lite app from the Market.

You are the first person to point this out! Many of the folks that used my method here also used erisuser1's Universal Root for Dummies! rooting method which also uses Gscript Lite and from which I used eu1's same methodology for the Scenario 3 installation method.

I didn't explicitly say in the instructions to download and install the Gscript Lite app (). I've updated the instructions in Scenario 3 to be more explicit regarding that.

You can get it (free) from the Android Market here:

https://market.android.com/details?id=nl.rogro.GScriptLite

Since it sounds like you've already got the gscript-sa-171.zip file extracted, you'll just need to follow the instructions at the bottom of Scenario 3:

Launch a new Gscript Lite instance and:

A. press the soft menu button
B. select Add script option (lower left)
C. press the Load file button
D. select the gscript-sa.sh script
E. leave the Needs SU? checkbox checked (you need root for the flash to work)
F. press the Save button (lower left)
G. you'll now be returned to the main Gscript Lite menu and you should
see gscript-sa available at the bottom of the list of scripts
H. to run the script, short-press the gscript-sa script name
I. you should be prompted by the SuperUser whitelist app to allow
the Gscript program to run the /system/bin/sh as root (select Allow)

You're pretty close...just install the Gscript Lite app and do the above (you might want to re-visit my updated thread to see if it makes more sense now).

Good luck and cheers!
