Help question about apps, storage, and SD card

Lurker
I'm very new to the android market, and just picked up an Evo, and I have a few questions. I had originally thought that apps were stored to the SD card, and that was the primary reason one was included. From what I have been reading, this is not the case I guess.

I ask this because I am used to using an ipod touch and Ipad where quite a few games and apps are around 100-sometimes 500mb in size. Would this mean that there are not games of this caliber available on the android market because of this? Just really curious about this right now, as stated from above I am completely new to this phone and the android market in general.

Would the SD card be used for something like music and pictures primarily, if it is not designed to hold games or apps?

Sorry to sound like an idiot about all of this, but some help would be appreciated.....thanks.

hello and welcome.

there are plenty of threads to get you started in the Android OS arena. if you need help searching for such topics, i will be able to help.

the SD card is Flash memory just as whats in your precious ipod or ipad tablet. its up to the developers of a app to allow it to be installed on SD card.

there are many games that you can store on the phones memory and some that can also be stored on SD memory.

remember this is a phone and not a gaming device. its designed for phone and office production functionality and music/video/photo player. playing 3d style games on this handset is quite the reality as i have 3 huge 3D games on the evo i use currently and i have plenty of storage for the small number of apps i have loaded.

so in short, yes the SD card can be used to store ant app or file.

Ever since android 2.2 (froyo) a few months ago, the OS has the ability to move apps to the sd card. However, the app's developer has to include this in the app, so not all apps will have this ability. Also, some system apps, or other cpu intensive apps, can not be moved to the sd card, just because the way they are designed.

I was very surprised when moving to android, that the apps are VERY small in size. most apps are under 2mb. Some games will require game data, but in most cases that data can be stored on the sd card, leaving only a small app file on the phone.

Go to the market, and try downloading a few apps that you like. You will quickly find out that they are very small. I have over a hundred apps on my phone, and still have over 100mb free.
