Question about charging the note 3

I just got my note 3 today from tmobile and i usually do this with my new phones i open it up when i get home and put the battery in and then just plug it into the charger for about 4hrs with it turned off then turn it on cause i heard turning it on right out the box and using is not good? i dunno i just think its better to get it home first and charge it up fully when its off then use it what do you guys think?
 
I just go for it with the charge the battery has when I open it. I try to let it die completely the first two times and then charge it all the way with the phone off. That's just me, though.

The manual says to use the charger to fully charge the battery before using the first time but does it mean the first time the user gets the phone or when the battery is first installed at the factory? I don't know that answer.
 
Mine came with a 60% charge so I setup my account in the store then when I got home updated or reloaded a bunch of apps. That brought me to 55%. I charged for 2 hours and got to 100%.

I don't think what you're doing is necessary but it can't hurt.
 
it does say to fully charge the battery before turning it on in the start guide so i just fallow that.

Whatever floats your boat.:) I used to do that back in my PocketPC days but I'm pretty sure batteries have become more robust than they were back then. There's a thread somewhere on our forums discussing this but I'm not sure which one it's in.
 
I don't bother with this, i remember reading somewhere a while ago that the full charge thing worked with older batteries but the new li-ion batteries don't have the so called battery memory. But each to their own
 
Apple is still advising one full charge / discharge cycle when you get a new Mac laptop and then one cycle monthly thereafter. Not old battery technology.

I think Tesla had some headaches where their electric cars continued to draw small amounts of current even while parked in storage for long periods of time, leading to (very expensive) lithium-ion battery destruction.

The concept of "off" in a smartphone is a little ambiguous these days when some small processing remains active listening for a user to issue voice-actived commands, but even then I'm sure there's logic to protect the battery from damage.
