Root Question about flashable zip files

I did a keyword search for this on the Ally Root forum and Google, as well as the general site search, so I apologize if it's already been addressed.

Is it safe to unzip a flashable zip file, edit its contents (e.g. removing system apps) to your liking, and rezip it?

Sure, as long as (assuming you're talking about a ROM zip) you don't remove a necessary system app.
If it is a zip with extra apps or whatever, it's fine.

Just make sure to zip the contents of the folder made by unzipping, not the folder that was made. Normally that would be a system and meta-inf folder, along with whatever else was in the zip.

I wouldn't unzip a file to be safe for the sole fact that if you do unzip it it already opens up the files that need to be opened up in recovery by recovery. i wouldn't do it until the unzipped file is already on your phone then unzip it on your computer

Unzipping doesn't remove the zipped file, just makes a copy of the contents. So unzipping is fine, just don't expect to be able to flash an unzipped folder. Unzip, make the changes you want, zip contents, flash and reboot :)

Sidenote, if you're running Amon_RA 3.0.6, signature verification is off by default, so you should have no issues flashing your edited ZIP.

Safety is the reason I asked about it here before trying it myself. The last thing I want to do is start tinkering with things and mess up my phone.

I know. I've used both. I was sarcastically pointing out that Amon_RA is so much better than the competition that it may as well be used exclusively.
