Root Question about flashing rom and Link2sd..

Hi folks, as you can see I'm new here. I've been lurking here for a while and you all seem really helpful. I have a V (2.2.1) that I bought probably in the old screen time period.
I have already rooted using Gingerbreak a few months back and still have terminal emulator and Busybox installed if that matters.
I also have link2sd installed and have most of my apps linked to a 500 MB partition on a 16 GB card. Will this cause any problems installing a custom rom?? I realize it won't let you move system apps but I had to ask. I have unfrozen all apps that were frozen in case that matters.
I have these files now on my card: BACKside-IHO-VM670-12162011, gapps-gb-20110828-signed, and iho-vm670-recovery-4.0.1.4.3 Is this all I need?
Looking at the thread, simplified-root-recovery-custom-rom Do I necessarily need Flash Image Gui app since it's a paid app? Also, to back up original rom, looking at the github binary page as well it says to use either Titanium or Nandroid or both? Any help would be appreciated and I understand these questions are already talked about to death but I'm a little slow hehe, thanks!!

Sounds like it. If your phone shipped with 2.2.1, it should be the older screen.

No, but after the install, you will need to follow these steps. Run Link2SD, click menu - more - recreate mount scripts. Then reboot.

Yup, you've got the basics.

No, it's just easier.

Titanium backs up individual files and apps. A Nandroid backup is a snapshot of the entire system. Think of the difference between a file saved on a flash drive, and a recovery disk that comes with a new computer.
Hope this helps.

brotherswing you're super awesome! I haven't done anything yet but you couldn't have been more helpful:D

Agree with everything brother said except you will need to do a full wipe so your links will be gone. That trick works when updating and not doing a full wipe. So you will need to backup your apps then after all setup download link2sd and set to auto link then batch restore your apps and link2sd will auto link most everything that is restored.

ok, I just found Nandroid 2.0 (from desktop), I'll put this on the card also, thankyou too btw benslgdroid..:)

Hey guys I'm trying to go back and forth between a few tutorial pages but i'm still not really getting what to do with the Nandroid? Right now I popped the card into the desktop and I'm just copying everything over into a folder for now. In this case am I supposed to be backing up the hidden partition too? I'm sure it's much simpler than I'm seeing it, my head is kind of spinning :D
I was able to succesfully root using Gingerbreak and made some kind of a backup but is it the same kind of backup I need like I did Gingerbreaking?

I think you're confusing yourself. Take a deep breath, relax, count to ten. Now, what guide are you following, and what step are you on?

I've got the binary page open and Jerryscript's rom wip BACKside thread. I guess I"m not clear on the backup although I have the visible partition of my card copied to desktop folder. Still haven't done anything yet.

Yeah, that's fine. I may not be able to give you a step by step with it, but the principles are the same. Jerry's ROM is under very heavy development, with tons of users (such as myself) so you will receive lots of help if you need it.

Do I choose backup first then, if so where does nandroid come in or does it matter anymore? Ok, no hurry anyway, thanks again

Yes you should backup now. "Nandroid" just refers to a backup made in the recovery as opposed to something done from a running Android system.

Ok the 3rd and 4th options are (wipe data/factory reset) and (wipe cache partition). If I choose wipe data/factory reset I assume it will give me those as 2 different options on next screen, so wipe data? Then do I want to wipe cache partition?

Actually, wipe data/factory reset is on thing. Most of us here on the forums will shorten that to "data wipe". Yes, you'll want to wipe the cache. There should be an option to wipe Dalvik as well, but it may be under an advanced menu, mine is. You'll need to do that as well.

So the wipe data/factory reset isn't the "you'll brick your phone if you do a factory reset" thing? Does it matter what order I do these things? The wipe Dalvik cache is in advanced as you said. So I can wipe data/factory reset then wipe cache partition then wipe dalvik? Do I also want to wipe battery stats (in advanced)? Thanks again:)

This is the only way to factory reset your phone without bricking it. The warnings are for doing that in the settings within the running Android system, so you are safe here. The order doesn't really matter, and battery stats is optional, but I do it, so ymmv.

Oh my gosh it seems to have worked:D Ok just installed Google apps too.. So, reboot to recovery again to restore apps?

Go ahead and install gapps, but no themes. then reboot. You should reboot a few times before flashing a theme (like mine! ;)), but it sounds like you've got it beat!

Ah yeah, Gingerbread is cool! :D:D:D
Do I reboot into recovery to get my apps back then? Install whatever recovery zip was made, but then I can tell it not system apps?? Thanks a bunch, I finally got the nerve to do it and you got me through brotherswing, and thanks benslgdroid!

No, the backup you made in recovery is your "Oh Shit!" button in case of emergency. You restore your individual apps from Titanium Backup (if you have it). If not, you'll have to reinstall them from the market. Sorry about that.
