Question about GPS

If you have GPS toggled on but no apps are using it (there's no GPS icon in the notification area, indicating that it is not in use), does it drain your battery as if it were being used by an app? I hate having to re-establish a lock after turning it off in the toggle menu (MIUI) and turning it on when I need it.

No it doesn't use power if an app isn't using it, however some apps do use it in the background. Also when you re-enable gps it's much quicker from a warm boot having already established a lock.
