Root question about LTE

So I started my journey into android several years ago with my g1. Something I never really noticed was having simultaneous phone/data capabilities. Since I've had my dx I haven't really come across too many cases where I needed it, but when I did it was kind of disappointing.

So my questions is, will we be able to use this sort of thing once its rolled out?

Since DX not LTE compatible the answer is NO. But if you upgrade to Bionic or ThunderBolt or any other LTE phones, then YES..

that seems silly, but I'm not gonna waste my upgrade just for LTE. I just had the idea that the software had more to do with it then the actual phone

LTE operates on different frequencies than EVDO, and requires new hardware. The DX cannot ever gain access to the 4G network, or the benefit of simultaneous voice and data, unfortunately.

In the meanwhile, there is also a 3G protocol called SVDO, that is implemented in the Thunderbolt. It allows simultaneous voice and data over 3G. However, the data rate is slower I believe, and that is why this feature is not being touted very much by Verizon.

SVDO also requires new hardware, AFAIK.

ok that makes more sense, thanks for explaining. I just think its very odd for my 3yr old g1 to have that hardware and such a new phone not to have it preinstalled for such instances. Then again I know how verizon works, so this isn't a surprise to me

G1 is GSM, which is a lot different from CDMA. CDMA has better voice cal quality, but GSM let you have simultaneous voice and data, more then three people on conference call etc

ok, makes more sense now...last question:

does 3g and cdma run on the same radio waves? cause that would explain why the phone can't access both at the same time...
