question about nandroid backup

I am new to android and just picked up a droid 3, i rooted it and now I'm looking at some nice roms like monster and steeldroid. All the tutorials to install it says to make a nandroid backup. Now i've installed rom manager from the app market and before it asks me to flash the rom it asks if i want to backup my current rom. Is this a nandroid backup?

thanks

Yes it is. It makes a 'snapshot' of your current ROM and internal filesystem(s), so restoring the backup returns the phone to exactly how it was. It's the ultimate disaster recovery tool, so make good use of it. :)

Technically yes. Although 80% of people on here who flash roms will tell you NOT to use Rom Manager, it's very buggy and you could brick your phone. It's much easier and more reliable to just do it through recovery. Boot your phone into recovery, go to Backup and Restore, and hit Backup. Then put your rom zip on the sd card, Wipe data/cache/dalvik, and then flash the zip.

I've been using Rom Manager for over two years, and I've had zero problems with it--it's certainly never bricked either of my Android phones (or the one I rooted for a friend's Droid).

ROM Manager is one of those subjects in device forums that is controversial, and has experts in disagreement, often arguing with one another, about its viability, stability, reliability, so on.

I've used it off and on across several Android devices and never had an issue, and always found it much handier to use than going into recovery menus. <----- Saying that in some threads here and there will start a bickering-fest. ;)
