Question about network names.

Currently on an LG F6. Sometimes it says LTE, sometimes it says 4G, sometimes it says 4G LTE.

Now, I know this phone is also running on the HSPA network. When I see the "4G" icon, am I actually on HSPA+?

Also, it's dropped on occasion to "2G". I take it this is EDGE?

I'm asking because I view the way metro pcs names their networks with more than a little skepticism.

For example a friend of mine had a Samsung Galaxy Exhibit, it said 4G in the status bar yet when I checked the settings it said UMTS which is not 4G.

HPSA + is considered "4G" by T-Mobile. When you see 4G LTE, your on the actual LTE network, 2G is indeed Edge.

A friend has the LG L9 which is an HSPA phone (no LTE). When he tried to map coverage via the Sensorly app, it showed up as 3G, rather than 4G (which T-Mobile likes to call it).

What gives?
