Root Question about Overclocking....

Okay, I know it is a probably a Newb question (and I'm well past the Newb stage), but I want to ask about Overclocking. Is it just to make things download or go faster? Or is is just a "mine's faster than yours" thing? Where do you find a quadrant score? Do you need an app for that? And I've read where you can set your oc speed (or something to that effect); what's that about?

Yeah, I know I'm annoying, but I just would like to know. I search this forum and couldn't find anything that answered my questions. Does anyone know where I can find them? Thanks bunches!

Overclocking is setting the CPU clock speed higher than what it is at the moment.

So our Nook runs stock at 800MHz, and can be OC'ed atm to 1.1 GHz. You will need to flash a custom kernel over the current one to allow this, and most RM's out there will require setCPU or similar app to actually make the clock speed higher. CM7 has built in CPU settings and doesnt require setCPU to overclock.

Quadrant is an app that is used for benchmarking devices. Its free in hte Market, check it out. My Nook gets 1700-2100 using CM7 and OC'ed to 1.1. Stock CM7 is about 1000-1500. Some say it doesnt mean anything, just to show off, real world use is more important.

I notice that certain actions will go faster being OC'ed. Things like installing/deleting apps, opening apps, things that require CPU to handle, things like downloading wont be affected since they are capped by network speed.

Stinky - thanks so much for the explanation! I'm running Phiremod v5.3, which includes the most recent (3/31) OC kernal from CM7. I just wanted to know what it was all about. I picked up Quadrant from the market this morning; my first run I got a score of 1328, so I'm right where I should be. Thanks again.

What are you using for battery profiles for undervolting? I'd like to use QuickClock, but find it doesn't work for determining lowest voltage (just goes into negative voltages), but the stress test does work.
