Root Question about returning mod'd phone

For some reason my phone reception has gotten very bad. I used to get at least a couple bars at home and now I am lucky to get one bar...it's usually no bars. The power button is also sticking.

Rom's shouldn't affect signal, do they?

I took it to my dealer and they recommended returning it to corporate store to return it since it is still less than a year old and covered under warranty.

I know that I should revert to Metro PCS original ROM but I have two questions.

If I return to factory settings it will be version 2.2.2 and I originally had 2.2.1. Does this matter? Second question is do I need to format the SD card since I partitioned it? If so what would be the procedure for this?

Thanks

A simple way to return to stock would be to just update to 2.2.2 using the mobile update tool.
And just keep your as card take it out of the phone when exchanging.
Also it appears that the cm7 roms display signal in bars differently although you are at the same -dB reception but I can't confirm that.
Hope this helps :)

Have you done a PRL update by any chance? It may improve or decrease your signal quality. In my case, PRL 3024 was great with high bars, PRL 3025 somehow lowered my signal (I think it detected less towers since im near the edge of the main city), but PRL 3026 so far has been better. And some ROMs do appear to have differences in how many bars it displays but so far I haven't had any dropped calls or bad reception. Even MMS seems solid.

i am currently using the Kelso mod (2.2.1 version). This is supposed to be based on the stock rom so I don't think it should effect my signal or its display of the signal.

I am currently using prl 3026. Android version 2.2.1. SW version MS690ZV4.

In order to do the update are you saying I can do it from my phone itself or are you referring to the procedure I found in this post.

In order to clear my SD card before I turn it in should I do a "Factory Data Reset" that is found under Settings>Privacy?

I don't know if they will allow me to keep the SD card as suggested above.

Yes that link is the lazy way to restore :)
And no you could go into recovery and format the as card, do it a few times if you like.
Or do if from a computer where you.can wipe it with different options. Make user to get rid of your partition if you have one ;)

Could someone give me a little more detailed explanation. I have a few questions.

First, I'm assuming I should format before I restore to factory, right? The goal here is to restore everything to factory so I can return the phone for replacement. Do I need to save/back up anything to my computer? I don't know what was on this sd card when I got it. (I don't care about saving any apps or data from apps that I've installed)

Second, if its possible I'd like to format from my phone since I don't have a micro adaptor for use in my computer.

I am running GNM recovery. How do I remove the partition and format the sd card from recovery as suggested above?

(recovery menu)
Under "Partition sdcard" there is an option "Repair SD: ext". Is this what I use to remove partition? If not please explain how I remove partition. Or is the partition automatically removed when I format?

Under "Other" menu option there is "Wipe Sdcard". Is this same as formatting sd card? In other words I do not see a "Format SD card" option and I don't want to screw anything up.

Thanks for any clarification.

If I'm correct your getting good reception. Its just signal bars are made different. I could have mine say full bars all tgd time if I wanted or all the way down.

Actually it is a poor signal issue. I've had some dropped calls and go into roaming on occasion.

I actually live just outside of what is a "moderate service area" according to the girl at the corporate store. she showed it to me on the map and I am literally probably 100 yards outside of this questionable service area. She also told me they do not guarantee service within a building(my house)??

Another question/observation

So I did the update and I assumed it would take me to back to factory settings and eliminate everything else off of my phone but it really didn't. My contact and email apps were still working. My shortcuts were still all on my home screen and it booted up in Launcher Pro. Now all the apps that were previously were on my SD card didn't work but I thought it was odd that the shortcuts and widgets were still there.

I checked my settings and it does say I'm running 2.2.2, (SW version)ZV7, and PRL 3026. I do also have the bloatware from MetroPCS back.

Is this normal (remnants of my old setup)? One of the reasons I ask is bc now I'm having some trouble rooting. I'm not sure if I did not remove everything when I formatted or what...I'm just a little puzzled.

Sounds like you had a2sd installed prevously and the new setup is picking up the ext partition.

Format the SD card after you back it up and reflash back to stock.

I did remove the partition and did format. As far as I can/could see the partition was gone and space available was 1.83GB.

When formatting does it matter if I format to FAT or FAT32?

I formatted to FAT which was the default bc I wasn't sure. Does this make any difference?

They wont check your android version when you bring it back either. They will pretty much just check for water damage. Pop out your SD put it in your new phone and then they will activate it. Toughest part of the process is the wait.

Also is an update that they put out. You are making it harder on yourself than you need to.

Got this all resolved. I did end up updating to 2.2.2 and reformatting sd. They didn't exchange the phone anyway...LOL

Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond
