Root Question about rooting the g2x

Exactly what is rooting what do you do to the phone, it sounds to me like you remove files that keep the phone locked and unique to that manufacterer like LG or samsung. And I understand what a ROM is it is like windows is to dos in the old days basically a user interface but what is a kernel? Is it something that I have to install seperatly?

Rooting is gaining Super User ( su ) permission.
Having "su" permission allows you to change all the files you were talking about in your post.
