question about the charger

can i use any micro usb cable, or does samsung use a proprietary connector?

I would assume you can use any micro usb cable since it follows the usb specs. Now if your talking about charging thats another issue. Different chargers may charge it but the power supplied by the charger may be less than the usb standard or even the included charger and if it is less it may not work or it will take longer to charge your phone.

thanks for the reply... so, in other words, any micro usb cable is ok for connecting to a computer, but for charging from a wall outlet stick with an oem charger?

Right any cable will work, but for charging I would look at its amp rating and only use it if its the same or only negligibly less.

But sticking with an OEM charger is always a a safe bet.
