Help Question about the new Data usage widget

I have a question regarding the new data usage widget. I noticed it was a part of the last update we got but I had not used it until just a couple of days ago.
For the past couple of days it has been right around 1.1 GB and slowly climbing. I looked at it this morning and it had not changed much.
About an hour ago it said 8.5 MB and right now it says 14.17.
Could my phone really be using that much data or am I missing something?

While I typed this post it went from 14.7 to 18.6!

Your phone sends data in the background for things like email. You can control this in wireless networks. It can be disabled or you can adjust the sync interval.
 
I have done that already. It updates on a schedule. I restarted my phone after I posted here and now the widget just says "connecting".
