Root question about unrooting

jcary13

Newbie
I rooted my EVO about a year ago using unrevoked (I think) and now it is giving me problems and I need to unroot it. There are some ota updates that I have declined, so my question is can I just run the ota updates to automatically unroot my phone? Or do I need to use other methods?

Welcome jcary!
I moved your thread here to better help you out!

As far as OTA's, you were wise not to accept them:)

I am just curious as to why you want to unroot?

What problems are you having? It is easier to fix problems if you are rooted. :)

Welcome to the forums! :D

I agree with Mike, unrooting is usually not the correct option.

However, since you have been declining all of these OTA updates ( that is good, you dont want to accept them), many of your problems can probably be fixed by simply flashing an updated ROM.

If you let us know what issues you are having and why you want to unroot we can make some helpful suggestions. :)

My problems are -
phone tells me i have over 50% battery left then 10min later it says 10% them in another couple min it dies.
When plugged into my charger the touch screen will often not work properly and i have to unplug it just to do ANYTHING
I constantly get low memory notification when I should not
If incoming text messages are too long sometimes it will only recieve the first part then freeze and I have to reset my phone to receive any more messages at all
When recording video it gets very choppy and makes it not even worth recording

What rom are you on?
Have you tried wiping cache and dalvik cache in recovery?
Perhaps a different rom, as Rx suggested, would help.

I'd suggest flashing an updated ROM before trying to unroot. This will 1 give you the most current fixes and 2 help us narrow down if the issue is software or hardware related. If they are software related flashing a ROM will fix it. If its hardware related your phone may be in need if repair

All iv done to my phone is root it so that I could tether it. So im still a noob with all this

And I have not wiped cache from recovery

DO what Mike and Rxpert say and flash a custom ROM.
If you're only stock rooted and you haven't cleared cache and dalvik in recovery ever, that would be a major reason why your phone isn't playing nice. And stock kernel won't give you good battery life IMO.

You're in good hands with Mikestoney, Ocn, and co. I'd agree don't unroot and try out something new.

I'm guessing you still got CWM recovery? If so first thing to do would be to update to an RA based recovery

Do you have a recovery? If so, do you know which one? If it is not Amon Ra, I would
go here--
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html

Click on "show" of the htcdev method. Obviously you can skip that part.
To change a recovery, go to step 2 "how to install recovery", then step 3 and go to install a custom rom listed there. MikG3.11 is the rom...use the full wipe version and just follow the instructions listed on how to flash it.
Just be aware, you will lose data, apps etc when flashing a new rom.

I'm guessing I don't have a recovery because i don't even know what u mean by that.
And thank you all so much for the advice, ill have to try to flash a new rom tomorrow when I get home since I'm stuck at work all day

o.k...no problem, I hang around this forum quite a bit and I'll check back from time to time and see where you are at:)

ok so i have some new info about my root...
i used quickboot to boot to recovery and im on Revolutionary CWM v4.0.1.4
does this matter or can i still flash a new ROM from here and everything will be ok?

Clockwork recovery is buggy when wiping before a rom flash.
So if you choose to change recovery now, just click on the link I provided earlier.:)
If you choose to flash a rom using clockworkmod, just wipe, wipe, wipe, wipe several times, EXCEPT SD CARD, do not wipe the sd card!!! Then flash rom.
But I would recommend changing your recovery...instructions in that link.:)

ok so i used the android flasher method and in when i use it, at the top of the log it says "please wait while your phone is flashed" but in the log it says "finished.total time: 0.021s" and gives me a finish button on the bottom that does nothing when clicked....on my phone it took me to the white screen where i can pick Bootloader, Reboot, Reboot Bootloader, Power Down and it created a data folder where i have my android flasher files extracted
this is all very confusing and i just want my phone to work right

Sounds like your bootloader screen....highlight bootloader, then from there highlight recovery and choose that....that should bring you to recovery....let me know what happens after that. Where did it create that data folder?

on my computer. when i downloaded Androidflasher and PC36IMG i put them in a folder i created and when i ran Androidflasher it made the data folder in the folder i had created

hmm, I have not used Android Flasher, but I have used the PC36IMG method and the adb method. I think the adb method is the easiest if you want to try that method to install the recovery.

You will probably need to download the files listed at the beginning of the htcdev method to use the adb method...
adb.exe
fastboot.exe
AdbWinApi.dll
HTC Sync 3.0.5551
Java Runtime Environment (JRE)

Those listed here are not links, but the links are in the guide :)

ok this worked! now i just have to flash the ROM and see what happens. thank you for being patient with me and for your help. Ill let u know how the flashing goes

i went to flash from sdcard, selected MikG-v3.11-signed.zip then it says installation aborted (bad)

Try a fresh download. Just remember to wipe properly. Also remember do not wipe your SD card. Wipe everything else 3 times then flash the ROM. I will be unavailable until tonight. If you want to continue that's okay. Someone else may come in and see this and help if necessary. I am on my phone now. But I have to go. ;)
