my friend has an unlocked samsung galaxy note that he bought in russia and is being used in the states. it is currently running on gingerbread, however he would like to update it to jelly bean. can my friend just update it through kies or will i have to root it and install a custom rom?

thanks for the help in advance.

Try an OTA update there should be one available. Go to settings, about phone, software update and check for updates. Do it on WiFi because it will be a large amount of data. You shouldn't need to root.

Well Jelly Bean isn't out yet but you should be able to update to ICS through OTA or Kies if it is the international version. If it's not the international then it'll be carrier specific which might require being on the Russian network it was bought from. If that's the case then a custom ROM (of which JB is available) would be the way to go.

Do the samsung kies thing. With root you mess up the warranty for the phone. I nearly did a root was downloading all types of files but the person who had advise me to root for an update went to sleep and the next day I was busy so after a week got reading about the root thing and since it was new never touch based with him again. I am quite happy with 4.0.4 but if 4.1 will give more battery life and the watch screen thing then I will wait on the Kies update but may be different for you.
