Help Question about Updating the new software/firmware for HTC Inspire??

I was wondering even though i can update and backing up my stuff from phone is a plus but can i just update anyways without backing up will i lose anything its only a OS update not a files update?
I have a HTC Inspire 4G had it now for 3 months and was just wondering if this is safe or it shouldnt matter even though i dont want to back up because i dont have internet at home

I only backed up my contacts to my sim card and pics which are already saved on the sd card.

As far as doing an ota update all the ones I have done on the inspire require wifi. Couldn't get an update on mobile data to go through. So if you don't have Internet at home you might have to find a wifi source.
