question about upgrading to 2.2

googo

Lurker
When I am upgrading to 2.2 on my Captivate do I need to remove my AT&T sim card first? Will it delete on my contacts, text messages, music etc?

I am trying to accomplish this. I have the phone successfully connected to device manager on the computer, but continue to receive appcrash when trying to install the Keis Mini to the phone.

You don't need to remove your SIM card. Backup anything you don't want to lose. Also, follow these instructions very carefully. Goodluck!
How Do I Update The Software On My AT&T SGH-i897 (Captivate) Phone To Android 2.2 (Froyo) Through Kies Mini For PC?

I have followed these instructions to the letter. I keep getting a window crash on both my laptop and destop computers. Is there another way to get this update without Kies Mini? Hell, shoud I just go into AT&T and have them do it?

Yeah if all else fails try AT&T.

It says on the website that they won't just do it in store because they aren't really trained to.

Hoenstly, I did this whole thing in one hour, no crashes, no problems, no memory loss, and the only thing that got deleted was which widgets are on the home screen (because those damn bloatware apps got re-downloaded, working on that now...).

If you are following the instructions and your comp or phone is crashing then maybe you should just not update it, since that could mean that there is a deeper problem and you'd just be pushing the phone and comp further.

Thanks, I will give it a few days and try again. If a no-go, I'll just keep the stock firmware, give the phone to my wife and look for a new pre-load 2.2 phone. :D

If you are adventurous you can put a custom ROM on your phone as well. I would do that before going to the AT&T store but i'm pretty tech savy, it depends on how comfortable you are with doing phone modifications and risking that you could damage it (small risk BTW - you can usually get the stock firmware back on the phone no problems).
