Question for AT&T users

Hey guys,

I am on T-Mobile and since we are in the midst of a switchover down the road, i as many are distraught over the thought of having to move to AT&T. I know there are other choices but i like having SIM cards to switch out a phone without having to make a phone call to the carrier to activate it, but my problem with AT&T is their call service. All i ever hear is that it sucks and you get dropped calls all the time.
I live in Vegas and AT&T isnt very good in many areas so i want to know from those that have these Galaxy S phones, how has your call service been? I know iPhone has as ton of problems but do you guys drop a lot of calls too?

Thanks in advance.

I would think when they actually combine you would get the same service where you live as you do now, if not better. and i know some people have had problems with dropped calls but i never have, and my reception has always been good

I can safely contribute "dropped calls" that I had to ROMs rather than the network, since I have no such issues on my current ROM, nor had I previously.

I've had this phone for almost a year, been with AT&T for close to 7 years now. At least in my area the service is reliable. I can make and recieve phone calls inside of my house and my place of work, likewise for text messages.

As has been noted in previous threads though, changing a modem can dramatically affect your call quality and GPS. That's a definite YMMV deal, and one that's very location specific.

Hope this helps.

Most of my dislike of AT& T comes from their terrible contracts and customer service, not actual wireless service. I can really only think of one location in recent years where I have had really bad service and that was Cumberland Falls, KY. No one's phone worked - we all joked we'd finally found all 3% of AT&T's uncovered Americans.

Myself and my lady have traveled all over the USA, Vegas too and I have been with ATT since 2001 and in that time I can honestly say that I have dropped very few calls in those 10 years.........definitely not enough to leave them for.

My only bad spot that stands out in my mind is while traveling though northern Maine....couldn't catch a signal for my life!

My lady has T-Mobile and her service is almost as good as mine.

All carriers drop calls/lose reception from time to time, I laugh when my buddy's Verizon drops calls and we are standing right next to each other making calls.....then he tells me how great the service is with them and how I should leave ATT! lol

Also, god's honest truth....my own experience with ATT customer service has been great, never had an issue with them yet....knock on wood! :)

I don't remember having bad signal in Vegas last August. But I didn't make any calls, so I can't speak for it. I'm glad I live in the Chicago area, where AT&T actually has pretty decent coverage.

In some areas it sucks. If yur just on the strip you may not notice. The hotels have different boosters for the carriers so customers can have good service. For instance, the Palms uses Verizon for their service so they have boosters all over the place there but i can get a signal in the basement there and certain other areas.

I've never had problems with signals except in the casinos ;)

I've been on AT&T since they were two tin cans and a string and while i have had dropped calls in known dead zones in my area, iPhones have exponentially more problems in the same area. People blame AT&T exclusively for the issues, but I suspect there is a bit of blame for Apple as well.

I do a fair amount of travelling and need international service some times and AT&T has worked almost all of the time without issue (other than cost).

I have issues with att service and i travel several times a year between ny and tx both driving and flying with no service interruptions. And a couple trips to toronto and new mexico with no problems

The only issue I've had with att phone service on my captivate is my phone doesn't actually ring before someone answers. I'll call someone and it is dead air until they say hello
.just annoying..other than that the part
you will prob like least about att are their market restrictions....no non market apps are available unless you root your phone. I hopefully what they say is true and we will soon have access to the amazon app store...

No longer true!!The Captivate is now open to third party apps. If yours isn't call technical support. You wil not see a check mark or anything but if you try and load the Amazon App Store for example it will load.

non market apps have been enabled, if you dont have it then you need to call att. the market restrictions are pretty much unnoticeable, i only knew of 1 app and it has since been removed from the market

The entire "AT&T" is terrible thing is largely due to iPhone fanboys. Sorry, but that is just the truth. I don't have a link handy but I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt that Jobs got cheap, bought some sub standard phone chips for the iPhone and that is one of the major reasons that every iPhone (and I've had them all up to and including my iPhone 4) do not do well when it comes to making and holding calls.

Want further proof? I always without fail carry a minimum of two AT&T smartphones, and have been for years. I have enjoy nothing but great call quality from AT&T. When my iPhone drops, I simply pickup my Android (any model) and the calls are excellent.

So no worries. The only possible way anyone has problems with AT&T is if they have an iPhone or if they life in one of AT&T's areas that are not that strong. If you know how a cellular system works, you know that every carrier has it's strong areas and weak areas. That's why they offer coverage maps. In CA where I live I have good coverage all over the state with both my carriers AT&T and Verizon.

My Captivate, my Galaxy S2, all my Androids for that matter are GSM (many of which I have procured from Hong Kong), and all work just fine on AT&T. In fact the only reason I've used Verizon over the years if for the choices of phones that have that AT&T may not. Like my Droids.

Cheers.
