Question for Google Voice Users

2 quick questions: first, if i set up GV without a new number, is there a way to set it up with a new number at a later time or do i have to do a completely new setup? second, if i DO get a new number, is my phone associated with that number solely or is my original carrier number still in effect along with GV's number?

I've just setup GV on my Blackberry to see if I could potentially drop my messaging plan, but it appears there is one big shortcoming. MMS doesn't work unless people send them to your non-GV phone number. So they need 2 contacts for you, and have to remember to send to your real phone number for MMS which sounds unlikely amongst my non-techie friends.

Is there a way around this, or is it just a matter of waiting for Google to enable MMS functionality?

At this time the only way to set it up with a new number is to get another invite. Although I set it up with a different number from my cell and I have the ability to choose another number if I pay a small amount... I believe it is $10. Its if you go to "Settings" and under phone number "Change".

Your original carrier number IS still in affect along with whatever Google Voice number you associate with it.

There is no way around this currently.... like you said its a matter on waiting to see if and when Google chooses to allow MMS messages

I have another question about GV: when getting a new number with all the handy features, does your carrier number still get its GV features as well (basically voicemail transcription etc.)?

Yes, you can still set use the GV voicemail on your carrier number. I just did it today with my Verizon phone number.
