Root Question for the Dev's

So I've decided to build a custom rom and just have a few questions. I'm curious if there are any other programs aside from eclipse to build roms? Also if anyone of you could point me to a tutorial of how of how to use eclipse that would be great. Thanks in advance

If you start from stock, you can do a LOT with notepad and Winrar (or Winzip).

You don't necessarily need Eclipse just to build from source, but it depends on the rom.

If you have not done anything like this before, start with JMZ's stock deodexed and use the first method, or go with CM and build from source that way. Neither method needs Eclipse. Both methods are the best way to start.I would at least play with the first method so you understand the file structure a bit before trying to do it from source.

Also, make sure to give credit for anyone else's work you used. Asking their permission to use it doesn't hurt either.

:)

Notepad++ or go home!

thanks for all the input guys, and just to be clear i am on linux based system so i can still just mess around with the stock files?

thanks for the input guys i'll trying giving it a shot with the stock rom. another thing i'm running on a linux system if that makes any difference. also is there a way to test the rom in a virtual environment before testing it out on my phone?

Linux, Windows, Mac, Beos, OS2, etc... doesn't matter for the first method.
Second method requires Linux (possibly OSX). Certain flavors of Linux are easier than others due to requirements.
