question mark on non ascii characters on sms messages

Hello. I couldn't find a thread about this, and I have no clue what might be happening. I have a Droid with Android 2.1 . I am on a CDMA network. I send messages to some people on a GSM and when we use non-ascii characters, like

I think it has something to do with how the characters transferred between networks. Back when I had a GSM phone, my friend would receive random characters on his cdma phone when I used special characters. Punctuation worked, but not much beyond that. His messages came out weird when he used special characters from Facebook posts via SMS.

So there is nothing I can do about it?
