Root Question regarding rooting, OTA or Pre-OTA?

Hello, first time poster here. I recently bought an HTC G2, and it was updated via the T-Mobile push a week ago. I ran across a post on the XDA forums (Click) and I was wondering what the difference between OTA and Pre-OTA would be.

Sorry if this is a noob question, but last thing I want to do is brick my phone on a terribly simple error.

if you updated with the OTA and you want to root, use the file wpthis-OTA.ko and if you did not update with the OTA then use the other one... its pretty easy i rooted at work in like 3 minutes.
