Help Question Thread for Smartphone and Droid Incredible Newbies

Still waiting for thoughts about a new Gmail account. But I have a new question.

When you flip the Incredible horizontally for qwerty keyboard text messaging, how come there is now send button? Do you always have to flip it back vertically? Seems a little weird to me. I know I'm tired today but thoughts anyone?

Ughhhh.... so if I get a ringtone file via text how in the hell do I save it as a ringtone to be used by this damn thing?

someone asked earlier, but got no answer..
I have had gmail for years, and there is tons of crap in the spam and other folders; I use it mostly for forums and other stuff..
when I get my incredible tomorrow, and it asks to sync with my gmail, is all that crap gonna download to my phone? as earlier suggested, should a "fresh" gmail account be setup for emails only?

You can just not sync the mail on that account but if you are gonna use it for email a new account may be the way to go. Do you get spam to the account? I rarely do. if you are getting mailings from the forums just set up filters to skip the inbox if don't want them on the phone.

Also a thing to consider is that you CAN NOT delete the primary(read 1st) account you put on the phone w/out wiping the phone.

Hey, New here. I was wondering if you can take pictures with the Droid Incredible, than post it in Facebook. Thanks.

thanks for that..Actually, I just went through my gmail and dumped all the crap, so, when I get the phone tomorrow, and it starts to download process, my account will be clean.
decided I didnt want to deal with ANOTHER email account, on top of the dozen or so I have already..

Two Questions,

Regarding above, my gmail contacts are listed first name last name with no comma, will I have a problem syncing them?

Cutting out a long story... I will have my phone for about a week before I can activate it (sucks, I am well aware), will I be able to use it as an ipod touch sort of device (use the wifi, download apps, set up contacts etc.) in preparation for my activation?

Thanks!

i am a newbie with this phone, not even having it yet, but I am certain you have to activate it first thing as soon as you turn it on, or you will get no further with it..

Thanks, is there anyone who ordered the phone online and already received at that can confirm this?

Greatly Appreciated!

Noob question. Can I set up HTC Mail widget to work with Yahoo Mail? I remembered someone mentioned it works, but it keeps having an error. Is it a pop or imap?

Firstly, I want to clarify that I already have gmail set up, its verizon that I won't be able to activate for a week.

Secondly, in the video below, he seems to set up the phone in the first 3-4 minutes and at no point does it seem that he requires verizon to be doing what he is doing

YouTube - DROID Incredible by HTC Review (interview w/ HTC)

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.
he's already activated it prior to the video
it says 3g in the status bar..

I've had dozens of smart phones, and every one required activation before they could do anything, so this one wont be any different.

What?! Why would you need a comma if they're listed that way? "John Smith" needs no comma but "Smith, John" does.

More Newbie Questions:
1) Is there a reason I cannot set up my Yahoo email? Sorry, but is it common knowledge that you are forced to go to mobile web/login to read it? No push?
2) Can any of you recommend a Yahoo IM app that lets you switch between 2 ID's?
3) I d/l the Swype link & app file to my phone memory (and card), but where is the "My Computer" type place to double-click/install it?
4) Can I create my own folders inside DCIM, on the card, to organize my pics? Same for music?

THANKS to all! I love this thing, but my learning curve is steep.

this looks good and would work, but honestly i'm looking for a widget like friendstream....where i slide over to a homescreen and the widget takes up a full screen and has my gmail account already open and i can see my inbox

is there anything like that? thanks again

The HTC Mail widget does just what you are asking for.

I have the DInc and have a question. Is there anyone to create filters in Active Sync Exchange that filters out emails so they don't hit your Inc. I have a rule setup in Outlook that automatically sends an email sent by a specific email address to go directly to my deleted items in my Personal Folders in Outlook 2007. The reason why i ask is because on my BB Storm, I setup a filter that blocked these emails from going to my BB Inbox. I also remember on my Moto Q with Win Mobile I always also able to setup a filter as well. I work at a help desk with a ticket tracking system, the system sends an email for every ticket opened by the help desk to all help desk employees, so my inbox can fill up quite quickly. I did notice that if I have Outlook opened up on my desktop these emails do not show up on my DInc, but when I close Outlook (Like I did last night before I went home), they are showing up today on my Inc.

When in the Gmail Settings screen there's an option for "sync for 4 days" or something along those lines (my phone's off and charging now) and I was wondering what that menu option means? Does it mean it only keeps my gmails for 4 days?

So, I get this awesome phone yesterday and I'm LOVIN' it. I'm coming from WinMo (TP2) and this phone is leaps and bounds above it. I just have a couple of questions as an Android Newbie:

Various previous posts said that regular USB chargers were compatible with this phone. That's not so. The end that goes into the phone is not like any regular USB charger on the market. I was under the impression that I would not have to buy a new car charger, but I see that I do. I can use my current USB wall or travel charger with my TP2, my ancient razr, and my digital camera. It will not fit the Incredible.

I bought an 8GB SD card, but I'm returning it for the car charger since the phone came with the 2GB card. I installed several apps from the Android Market, but they are on the phone's memory. Nothing (not even app info) went to the SD card. So, what's the purpose of installing the card??? I installed Astro File Manager (don't know how the heck to use it) to see this. I'm lost with app storage.

Lastly (for now), what's all this mount/unmount business when connecting your phone to a PC to transfer files or back-up contacts?

Someone please help because I'm loving this phone. I just want to understand the operating system better. Thanks in advance!

Is there a way to mark all email AS READ, I can't find the option anywhere.

This might be what you're looking for. Go into Gmail (if that's what you're using), and select the emails you want to mark as read (I don't think there is a Select All). Then click the MENU button and select "Mark Read".

Okay, so here are my strange 2 questions:

1) Why do sometimes the HOME, MENU, BACK, & SEARCH buttons light up, and other times they're not lit. Is my phone defective or is this a "feature"?

2) I'm using the Gmail app to manage my emails, but i hate when I open an email that it expands it to full size. The iPod Touch has it shrunken so you can see the full layout on the screen, and then you can zoom in. On the Droid Incredible, it's always zoomed in and makes me have to scroll everywhere to see what it says.

-Is there a gmail widget that I can put on one of my homescreens? I want to be able to flick over and have my updated gmail on one my homescreens but I only see a widget of HTC's mail...

Thanks for helping out a fellow android n00b

As far as I can tell, when you set up your phone for the first time, and enter your gmail login info, a Gmail widget is included/created (I have also been lucky enough to get a pre-ordered Incredible).

From the home screen, press the up-arrow at the bottom left of the screen to get access to "All programs." A Gmail widget should already be present. Press and hold the widget, and drag it to an open space on your home screen.

If you didn't include your gmail login during setup, just run the setup wizard from all programs, again.

DO NOT get a car charger! You can get a USB car adapter at any Wal-Mart, for about $5. This will give you two or more USB charging ports that you can then plug ANY USB device into your car, using the device's original USB cable. Generally, I have found USB car chargers to be expensive crap, that break easily.

Mounting/unmounting, is just a safe way to deal with removable media storage. Do you just plug/unplug your USB connected device, normally? If so, don't. Take the time to mount and unmount. Otherwise, one fateful day you'll be coming back to this forum asking,

"How do I recover lost files from my Micro SD card?"
