Help Question Thread for Smartphone and Droid Incredible Newbies

Does anybody know how to get ringtones to play when the screen is locked? When my screen is locked and I receive a call, my phone vibrates but doesn't ring. When the screen is not locked and I receive a call, I hear the ringtone. Ideas? I can't seem to find the setting anywhere... TIA

Why do you feel compelled to come into this thread just to critisize the very nature of the thread. There are lots of threads. Find one that you're interested in. Stop trolling.
 
In regards to the HTC Mail Application.... where can I set up sound/vibrate notifications for that? I found where to do it in the GMAIL app but don't see anything about notification sounds in the settings for HTC Mail. Does it have that capability?

Also for the Exchange functionality, will I get meeting notifications and can I accept them from the phone?

If you go to gmail.com with a web browser, go through the settings page and enable IMAP & SMTP, you can set up the HTC mail widget to check Gmail.

There are generic IMAP & SMTP setup instructions on gmail.com under the help link.
 
Hi I may have a dumb question here but I added a video on my phone but it's not in a folder just put it under my docs on the phone. Is there anyway to play this video on the phone? Do I need a dedicated video folder? Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

You should be able to find it in the gallery and play it from there.
 
OMG! Pleeease Help! The nice lady at verizon transferred my contacts from my Razr v9m phone to my droid. My problem is that all the home addresses, email addresses, birthdays, picture id's etc. did not transfer. Is there some way to retrieve it??? I've searched everywhere. I surrender.

I doubt you will have a magic program for that, covering every aspect of a contact entry. If you can sync the old phone with maybe MS Outlook, you could then export that data into Gmail Contacts and then use that as your main sync in the future. I never used the google calendar and contact system before yesterday, but I like it, have all that same info in there.

As a last resort, sync what you have in the droid now with google contact system and then manually add the missing data. I wouldn't bother adding anything until you had a sync system to whatever you like set up and working.
 
How do I transfer items from my SD card to the phone's internal memory without using a computer? Thanks for the help.
 
I feel really stupid but here it is... how do you forward a text message. I cannot for the life of me figure this out.

Edit: Nevermind, gotta hold the message for a few seconds.

Hmm, well it appears to be working now. I did disable the "Quiet ring on pickup" setting. I wonder if that made the difference.
 
First off I'll start with an answer to a previous question.

I converted my .avi files with Handbrake. Used Iphone and Ipod touch presets, then changed
picture size: width = 800 if source > 800,
or the same as the source width.
video: 15 fps / constant quality= 60%
audio: bitrate 128 (2 places)
This setting causes the files to be a little smaller, can probably tweak to make them a lot smaller and still look great.

I stored them on the emmc memory under a folder named videos, in subfolders. You can play them in the media player thingy, but I can't get it to show file names and it's hard to tell what I'm playing, so I just browse to the folder using Astro and click on the file I want to play. They look great.


Love, love, love this phone. Exploring all day and still have a few questions and issues I couldn't find answers for.

1. I've turned off "haptic feedback' under Settings/sound & display and turned off "sound feedback" and "vibrate when typing" under settings/language & keyboard / touch input / text input, but the phone keypad still vibrates. Is there another place to turn this off that I'm missing?

2. I saw the answer to this somewhere but can't find it now - how do I turn off NYC in the weather widget? I removed it and added again and saw where to add cities but couldn't delete any.

3. How do you set up your wireless IDent for the LAN?

4. I copied some music to the emmc memory and it plays great, but I don't understand why some of the albums have album covers showing up. I didn't have them - is it getting them automatically from the web? Why just some of them?

5. I made a password protected excel file on my laptop and copied it over, but Quickoffice won't open it. Guess it's just not supported?

6. How do I clear out the maps layer cache/history? By the way, the maps layer is great!!! I made a lot of .kml files from my old GPS receiver and loaded them into My Maps on the laptop, and they all look great on the Inc - and it's so fast!

7. I know they're dorky, but i want a tether for hiking. The hole is too tiny though. Anyone know where to get tethers with a really tiny hooky thingy?

8. I have a lot of .txt files for various data I wanna carry around with me. All the text editors and quickoffice show a font that is too small for me to see (old eyes). Any suggestions for one where pinch to zoom works?

9. Same problem with gmail - text too small and no zoom.

10. Charged phone until light turned green. turned off phone while still on charger. Light turned amber again and took about 15 mins to turn green again. It won't charge fully while it's on? Do I need to do this every time to get a full charge? Seems strange. Oh, when I want to do a full discharge / charge cycle (the once a month thing), do I let it run until it turns itself off or turn it off when it starts warning me?
 
How do you rename folders you create? I chose "New Folder" and it placed a new folder on one of my screens but I can't figure out how to give it a name.
 
-How do I completely stop an app from running? For example, when I back out of NFL mobile, it is still running in the background but how do I shut it all the way down?
-A program called Task Manager by Rythym Software is my favorite, but they are many more of programs that are like it in the Market.

-How do I edit "my dictionary" that I have when texting. I accidently added a few words to my dictionary that I want to erase...?
-Tap menu when suggested words show up and select View Added Words. From there, you can choose to delete them.

-In the HTC weather app, how do I delete a location so I don't have to scroll through it every time. I don't care about the weather in New York and want to delete it but don't know how
-Tap on the Weather app, select Menu, and delete. From there, just tap the location you don't want and then delete.

-Is there a gmail widget that I can put on one of my homescreens? I want to be able to flick over and have my updated gmail on one my homescreens but I only see a widget of HTC's mail
-An alternative is to switch you GMail account to POP3 on your computer and you can add it like that from your phone.
 
my weather "update automatically" won't stay checked... my location and my networks are turned on. and when i try to check it, it says, "Data Warning: This may result in additional charges from your wireless provider. Enable automatic download of weather data?" But when i check it then check the weather then go back to settings, its unchecked!

I really need to know the answer to this as well. Anybody know how to not get your facebook contacts in your dialer but still like your phone contacts to their own facebook? Thanks

Also when I got to Settings>Accounts and Sync it won't let me add the "Facebook" Account (not facebook for HTC Sense) When I press "Facebook" it doesn't respond. I thought if I linked regular facebook instead of the one for HTC sense that my contact problem would be solved but it is not letting me do this. Any one else have the same problem??

Please help, I want to have my contacts linked with their facebook but I DO NOT want all of my facebook contacts in my contacts list. How can I do this? :confused::(

This will give you two or more USB charging ports that you can then plug ANY USB device into your car, using the device's original USB cable. Generally, I have found USB car chargers to be expensive crap, that break easily.

Mounting/unmounting, is just a safe way to deal with removable media storage. Do you just plug/unplug your USB connected device, normally? If so, don't. Take the time to mount and unmount. Otherwise, one fateful day you'll be coming back to this forum asking,

"How do I recover lost files from my Micro SD card?"

I just went to my local wal mart based on your suggestion, but I could only find 2 usb/car adapters 32.88 and 34.88 I am hoping if I go to a super center they will have something closer to 5.
 
Another question here, all help is greatly appreciated... After showing off my incredible to friends, I got it back and noticed they were using the google quick search box to search for some pretty nasty stuff (porn). Is there a way to delete these quick searches so I don't have to see them every time I use this feature. thanks again:)

Sure, blame your friends...:D Settings, Applications, Manage Apps, Quick Search Box, clear data.
 
I bought one of the mono price wall chargers that have been posted in several links and it doesn't work.
The charging light goes on but it causes the touch screen to freeze up. Anybody ordered one from somewhere else that works?
