Root question - wifi tether, custom kernel, stock rom

Up until recently I have been monitoring the MIUI and CM7 threads for development progress. Unfortunately, I usually leave bluetooth on and when I am at home, wifi on, so when I read about the CPU pegging issue I took it as a show stopper. I also would like the HDMI option available if I so desire (not a show stopper).

So, as a result I have not installed either MIUI or CM7 on my Triumph. Wifi (or bluetooth) tether is becoming increasingly important to me so I need to do something. BTW, I wish to tether an iPad 2 so at this point adjusting the client MTU values is not an option, at least until I can jailbreak it anyway.

My question is: is there a custom kernel I can install to give me the wifi tether "fix"? A kernel that will function with my stock ROM so I have all the out of the box functionality (most importantly no issues with bluetooth and wifi being on simultaneously)?

Forgive me if this is a noob question. Big props to isaac and tickerguy and all the other devs who's hard work make all our tinkering possible.

I use the stock ROM with the Umph Oddball kernel and the Barnacle WiFi Tether app works fine with no modification needed.

Virgin Mobile's official tethering policy

According to the Virgin Mobile's Terms of Service (ToS) available at http://www.virginmobileusa.com/legal/terms-of-service-no-annual-contract

Virgin Mobile's official policy about tethering is

Currently Virgin Mobile does not offer any plans that allow tethering. If you need to use your Virgin Mobile service for mobile internet please sign up for a Broadband2Go plan and purchase the appropriate device at the following link Broadband2Go - 3G Mobile Broadband Service | Virgin Mobile

Talking about using a 3rd party app to circumvent the ToS is against the site rules. :(

I don't know that everyone knows it is against the terms of service, so it's just a friendly reminder. :)

As for your other question, the CPU peg from wifi & bluetooth only happens on the CM7 based ROMs we have, not on stock. The HDMI aslo works on stock, but not the 2.3 ROMs. Those are about the only downsides left on the 2.3 ROMs.

Agent, thanks for the reply. I have a question about the site rules. We can talk about tethering, but not the app that allows it?

So, it sounds like using the Umph Oddball Kernel wont break anything. But does it include the fix for the thing in the previous paragraph? :)

I mentioned that I am trying to tether an iPad 2 and I cannot set the MTU values. Will using this Kernel mean that I won't have to?

Really any talk about tethering on a plan that isn't supposed to have it is frowned upon. I don't think you are trying to be sneaky or underhanded about it, just had an honest question. But it is a grey area and is best to make sure people know what the carriers rules are. From my understanding, talking about tethering in general is OK (as it is a native part of the Android OS). But when a carrier says it is against the ToS and someone is looking for a way around that it is not OK. Make sense?

I don't think the Umph kernel breaks anything. I use CM7 and have for quite a while so I can't say definitively. I also don't have any need to use tethering on my phone and don't know.

We have unlimited data on these plans but if many people try to abuse it as their home internet as well, I don't know how long that will last. Being that it isn't on contract they can stop it at any time that they want as well. I don't think they are going to do that, but it is possible and I am just trying to show some perspective. I don't think VM will care if you tether your ipad to your phone now and then, but if you are doing it as your home internet and are using a ton of data, they might take issue with that.
