Root Question

Hey guys,

I am new to the forums but I have owned my Vibrant for about 3 months. I know the phone has more potential then I use on it. I have read articles on rooting and ROMS but Im not sure if I completely understand. Say I wanted to ADD 2.2 on my phone..would it have it be rooted? I know I definately want WIFI calling and the WIFI tethering and some more things that 2.2 has to offer.

I am just curious is there a write up step by step on how to do something like this? And also what is the difference between ROMS. If someone could clear this up for me that would be great. Thanks in advance for any help

~Nick

It took me months of reading and research to gain enough knowledge and confidence to PROPERLY flash a new ROM.
I'd advise you to begin at XDA forums (or here) and search for ROOTING and ROM Flashing.
You cannot "add" 2.2 to your phone only replace 2.1 with 2.2. This is where a custom ROM flash comes into play. You must be ROOTED in order to accomplish this task. I started with basic rooting and lag fix. Once I learned enough about ODIN, Titanium backup, and ROM Manager, only then..did I select and flash a new custom rom.
The information for you is here! Take your time, open a Coke, have a coffee, or whatever relaxes you, and enjoy all the info that this site and XDA has to offer!

Yes that is the correct way to root your phone.
OCLF or one click lag fix (available at market) does eliminate some "lag" in the device, but I've found over time, the lag returns without restarting my phone. It certainly boosted my quadrant score, but real world application and usage is where it's at...
I'm currently running a Team whiskey ROM called NERO V5. It has an addition built in to it called VOODOO, which changes certain files in order to eliminate lag. It works extremely well, and it's BASE OS is android 2.2 commonly called "froyo."

And don't apologize for being a noob, because I still am as well!
With proper dedication to study, you'll be a champ in no time!

Alright I tried to Root the phone with the steps it gave and it said. I renamed the download update.zip and put it on the INTERNAL memory and then hit reinstall packages and it says E: Cant Open /sdcard/update.zip and i followed the instructions to the T. any ideas what it could be?

The Funny thing is I work for Tmobile

You may want to delete that .zip file and download a new one. Just to be on the safe side. Or you could get yourself the Galaxy S one click root program. It basically just puts the proper update.zip file in your internal memory for you. It also gives you a shortcut to unroot in the event that you need to return your phone for service. Seeing as you work for them, they may frown on it even more lol. Don't apologize for asking questions, either, we have all been there. I was less patient than the previous poster on flashing custom ROMs. I went from bone stock to running an i9000 port in less than an hour, just because I was so fed up with the empty promises I had received over the months. If you need someone to walk you through it, shoot me a PM and I will give you my number. It's easier to talk you through it.

Ok after hours and hours of reading I was ablr to figure most of this out.

I rooted my phone

I DL'ed ROM MANAGER and used the Flash ClockWORKMOD Recovery.
now does that backup your old system just incase you should have to bring it back to factory?? should i save a copy of that on my computer just incase?

Then I put axura onto it. It seemed to work fine so does that mean I am good to go?

Maybe a bad flash? Try re-flashing but before you flash the ROM do a factory reset from within CWM. Then flash, then wipe the cache. Then go in to Advanced, wipe dalvik cache, and fix permissions.

As Stig has said, sounds like a bad flash. His advice to wipe both of the caches and reflash is a solid one. Make the phone as clean as you can for the new ROM. Also, if you're using Titanium Backup, only restore your bookmarks and wifi data when it comes to system apps. If you're doing a batch restore of apps and settings, you may be restoring some old settings that are not compatible with the new OS. Best method is to let the ROM work on it's own stuff without trying to force it to do something from another ROM, even a stock one.

Awesome. After you drive that ROM a few days, let us know how you like it. If you have any questions or concerns, you know where to go.
