Root Question

I am new to all this and was wondering what is gingerbread, liberty and a few of the other ones I have seen and what is the differences between them. I have a DX that is stock rooted at the moment and have read through quite a few posts to gain some knowlege on this. I still need more though it seems. Don't want a $400 paperweight. Thanks for any information you can give.

it all depends on if you want to goto gingerblur now or wait...
theres a post with all the rom/themes available for the DX, the 3 i like are zombiestomp, apex 1.4 and 2.0, and broobcomb 2.0.
look around and ask questions
and ALWAYS MAKE A NANDROID

also welcome to the site :)

What exactly is gingerbread? I see people saying they are running GB or Liberty. Are these op systems?

I think you have things grouped up a little too much. Gingerbread is Android 2.3. Pretty much the latest Android OS for phones right now. Prior to that Froyo 2.2 and before that was 2.1, 2.0, 1.5.....

Liberty and ApeX along with others are modified versions of the various Android platforms and referred to as ROMs. All of the ROMs require root status to install.

Each ROM has been tweeked buy its creator to improve performance, add features and in some cases take away features such as Blur elements which tend to slow down the phones performance. Be aware that each ROM requires a particular Android OS and they are not interchangeable.

Before messing around with ROMs, you need to understand the SBF process to return your phone to OEM status as well as how to back things up. I personally no longer make backups, I just wipe it all clean and install whatever im installing fresh. But my phone is just a toy and not a business or social interface so I dont stand to loose much this way.

The latest batch of ROMs are for GB leaks. There have been 3-4 leaked versions of GB in the past month or so and each one seems just enough different that you need to be on your toes and read and follow the install directions carefully.

Thanks, I am just getting into this and haven't figured out what is what. I like the idea of customizing my DX but am still reading up on what the different options are.

I have gotten titanium backup pro for back up purposes, ROM Manager and Astro file manager for a start.

Welcome to our own little corner of geek-world! You joined at a good time! We are getting ready to have an official release to the DX, (also known as) GingerBread!

buy droidx and droid 2 bootstrap apps... 2 bucks each

DX bootstrap isn't compatible with the Gingerbread builds at this time.

Buying both would be generous. They are free on Koush's website. I bought the DX version a while back but downloaded the D2 for free...

Some people have gotten the droid x bootstrap to work by disabling usb debugging. I always had to use the d2 bootstrap. Overclocking is very delicate and time consuming. You could inadvertently apply unstable settings and crash your phone.

NEVER apply your settings at boot until you know this will not be the case. There are a few guides around that can teach you what you need to know. read them, understand them, and when you think you're ready, read them again.

Become as familiar with your phone as you can before you go changing anything. that is one thing I have noticed in my short time here, people don't quite understand things but try to o it anyway and....Opps. I messed something up.
