Like Phat said a lot of times the communications errors between PC and Android Device are caused by either no drivers installed or incorrect drivers. Please confirm that you have those drivers installed before getting back with us about your issue!

Also you have to make sure USB debugging is enabled on the phone so you can transfer stuff.
